Just curious. Found a nice Custom, split diamond headstock, no name. Wondering what your experience with these is. |

Hi, Sounds interesting. Does it have a set neck? How would you compare it to an Ibanez LP. How's the plating for age? Any serial no. |

I posed the same question a while ago - going so far as to write Michael Wright (A Different Strummer, Guitar Stories Vols. I & II) to ask his opinion. The end result of my correspondence with him and some Canadian distributers that were active in the late '70s was this: Mann guitars dating from the late '70s and possibly into the early '80s were "Ibanez" guitars out of the Fujigen Gakki factory carrying a different marque. As far as anyone knows, these were not seconds, nor were they extraneous inventory. It appears they were distributed predominantly throughout Canada (like Antoria were "Ibanez" guitars going to England). These guitars are identical in every way to the Ibanez models, including typical Ibanez hardware such as "star" tuning machines, Super 58 pups, Gibralter bridge, etc. I have seen several of these Mann guitars out of Fujigen Gakki - including a Howard Roberts, an L6, and a "Musician" - and can confirm this from my own experience. Somewhere early in the '80s, Mann started sourcing guitars elsewhere, and suddenly their models are unrecognizable (and cheap!). Shortly after that, they disappear. The long and the short of it is, if you see a Mann that looks like a vintage Ibanez, it is a vintage Ibanez with a different name. And (as a rule) a very reasonable price! :) |
