AR30 Questions

Author Message Scott Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:03 am:    Hey! I was hoping some of you that frequent this site could help me out. 2 days ago I bought a 1983 Ibanez AR30. I got on that "other" vintage Ibanez page and could only find out that the AR30 was only made in 1983. My questions are, what is it made out of? It's all black with no binding so I don't know if it's got a maple top over mahogany. It's heavy so I'm guessing it is mahogany. Also, it has two toggle switches and two volume knobs and one tone knob. The toggle switches, one is a coil tap, anyone know what the other one is? It seems to brighten up the humbuckers but muddys up the single coils. Any idea what kind of pickups this beast shipped with? I know thats a lot of questions but any info would help.... If no one has a better suggestion, pull one of the pickups and look at the wood inside, You should be able to tell whether it's a maple cap on mahogony. Regarding the toggle switches, are they 2 position or 3? The usual are 3 postion, what they call Tri-Sound. Scott Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:03 am:    John, The toggle switches are two way. One's definatly a coil tap. The other is a bit of a mystery. Phase switch maybe. They seem to be rather rare, I can't find any info on them. Evert Jepma Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:03 am:    The AR-50 was replaced in 1983 by the AR-30. The 1983 Artist catalog however doesn't feature the AR-30. It stayed in the [European]price-lists until 1985 mike g. Posted on Thursday, December 13, 2001 - 1:57 pm:    Hey Everyone, While cleaning off my AR30 last night, I had it under a bright light and realized that this is a neck-thru construction without a volute at the headstock. I had never paid much attention to this before and now I have to dig out the other ones to see if they are all the same. Anyone else notice these features on theirs ? Mike G. The Ibanez Musicians had neck through construction. That means the sides of the body are attached to the neck which terminates at the end of the body. Winnie mike g. Posted on Saturday, December 15, 2001 - 6:45 pm:    Hi Winnie ! Not a set in neck...The neck appears to go straight through to the lower bout with the wings being 2 seperate pieces. The guitar I was cleaning was a black finish so I did not notice this at first,but then I checked my sunburst one and sure enough,it too appears to be a neck-thru body construction. Also no volute on that one either. Another thing to note, These are lighter in weight than the other Artists. I will have to pull the control panel and pickups to take a peek at the wood.
