Author Message spiro Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:03 am:    I was just wondering if anyone could answer this question about the three Gibson copies of the V Explorer and Moderne? A Were there any that were actually made of Korina as all the ones I have come across have a Korina like stain and more than likely made of ASH or Mahogany. B What are they worth as a set in a 9 condition in OHSC? I was at a guitar show 3 years ago and a guy came through the door with what looked to be an ibanez Flying V made with real Korina Wood. I would not have believed had I not seen it for myself. Anybody else seen any Ibanez V's, Explorer's, or Moderne's made with real korina Wood?? I was watching a Lynrd Skynrd concert on VH1 a few weeks back and one of the guitar players had a Korina Explorer. The size and placement of the logo on the headstock just didn't seem right for a Gibson. I wondered if it could be an Ibanez copy. Nah, if I were in LS, would I play a copy! Joe Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:03 am:    Rick Medloke (sp?) Of LS does play an Ibanez!! As far as I know Ibanez never used korina. The Destroyer, V, and Moderne were made of Ash. Though I read in an Vintage Guitar Mag interview with Jeff Hasselberger that there were some bleached mahogany Destroyers, (about a dozen). He does play an ibanez lawsuit on stage and has since the late seventies with Blackfoot. I have been sidestage many shows and promise y'all it is most assuredly an ibanez. next time i see him (should be some time on the summer tour) I'll ask him about the history! I have (3) 1976 Ibanez Destroyers and want to know about Korina or not. Because I would not recognize Korina if it bit me in the ass, I appreciate the fact that 1958 Gibbys were made of it. I have endeavored to learn. I have a page advertisement from a summer 1975 Guitar Player and the Ibanez ad specifies "solid Korina Body, built-in maple neck" and "a grand's worth of sound for $395.00". The guitar wood grains in that 1975 Ibanez ad look very much like any mahogany 1976+ Gibby. Like the Edge's. Or my '96 Burgundy one for that matter. I have one 1976 Ibanez that is heavier than an anvil but the wood grain is un-exciting or rather plain/plankish. My other two 1976 Ibanez's are lighter but have a gorgeous 3D, wavy, fiery, liquid grain that dances hugely in various light angles. Quite spectacular!! It really looks like liquid gold is oozing off. So what's up with that? If you know some of the brilliant wood grains on the Ibanez, what wood is that? Could my very dense, unattractive-grained one be Korina and the brilliant ones be ash or something? Or vice versa. There has to be an "eyeball" litmus test for what grains look like Korina and what grains look like ash. So what is it? Craigjc (Craigjc) Posted on Monday, April 05, 2004 - 7:20 am:    Hard to tell without pictures, but it sounds like the plain woodgrain Destroyer is Korina and the other two are ash. Ash has a definite "striped" alternating grain to it whereas Mahogany and Korina have a very small, tight grain with little or no alternating "stripes". October 1975: "solid Mahogany" November or December 1975: "solid Korina body" February 1976: "solid Korina Body" The pictures all look like mahogany. Eddie says his was Korina and loved it (he recorded most of Van Halen I with a Destroyer) until he chopped it up. Then he got a later one made of ash which he said sounded like sh*t.
