I've just come across an Ibanez L5S copy with a set neck with a cherry sunburst finish.The pickups are gold plated Les Paul Recording style pickups.The condition of the guitar is excellent.I believe the model nunber is 23990X.There is no serial number on the guitar therefore I presume its pre 76.
Would anyone know the approximate date that these guitars were released, are they relatively rare and what would be a fair and reasonable price for such a guitar? |

thanks for the reference site.I recently purchased the L5S and I am impressed with the quality of this guitar.So far I've been able to establish it was manufactured in approximately 1973 , as it has the oval shaped pick-ups.I'm wondering how many other forum members own a L5S and to what degree is this guitar rare/collectable ?

Hi Mel, Bob!
Let me jump in on this one. Just since yesterday I am too a proud owner of a L5S replica (2399 DX)!
It is also the old type with the goldplated recording-style pickups (which were replaced by goldplated humbuckers in 1976 as you may find in the catalogues on our Ibanez page) and no serial number. So that means it's manufactured before end of 1975, when Ibanez started using serial numbers. It's a great guitar in original condition, much heavier than a Les Paul copy. I''m not able to tell you how it sounds, because I immediately took it apart to clean it, because it was very dirty. You won''t believe the incredible neck-binding!! The cover plate for the control compartment at the back is matching wood, no plastic! Unfortunately mine has a little damage in the laquer at the edge near the control knobs (probably fallen down from it's strap once) but for the rest it is in remarkable good shape. When I got the parts fixed together again I will come back to you to tell you more about the sound etc. As for the value: I paid 600 US dollars for it, but hey: I''m a fanatic collector and these babies are RARE (in capitals!!!).

Could you post up the pics please? There are some good reference shots here apart from a few hardware abnormalities.
Easily restorable and I'm soooo tempted but it's too near Christmas and my budget is being eaten up buying Christmas prezzies.

Don't want to sound blasé......but I already have this model in my collection. All original and with the old "low impedance" pickups.
I think that interested folks took the chance that this guitar may pop up for a second auction. Although it's a rare guitar I think the price was too high. And besides: the tailpiece was not complete (plastic inlay was missing).
Do you agree with me that it's a hell of a guitar, by the way? Do you have also the version with the "low" pickups, or the newer one with the humbuckers?

I can tell you why there is probably really limited interest in this model - the Gibson that it is based on is probably one of the least popular Gibson designs. I bet you could probably get an actual Gibson version of this model for around the same price as the Ibanez auction if you looked. |

I cant imagine where you would be able to pick up a Gibson version of this guitar for $650 (£382). If you see a Gibbo L5-S for that kind of money then please let me know and I'll get a loan out.

Sure it's a fantastic looking instrument and I did notice the few missing bits but no, I have neither version. I'd settle for a humbucker or Low Impedence version but at the moment my guitar budget is rock bottom.
BTW is your guitar pretty heavy?

Yeah....this guitar is H E A V Y.......
I just compared: my set-neck Ibanez Les Paul (solid top, too) weighs 4,5 kilograms, the L5-S goes to 5,5 kilograms. I dunno what that is in Lbs., but I'm sure you can translate that.
It's a hell of a guitar, like I said before.
I think I'm one of the few happy guys who owns this model.....

Hello Six, Hello Harry,
I also have the L5-S (2399 DX) and it weighs in at approximately 10.2 lbs which is roughly the same weight as the MC-500's and the PF-400's that I have. I also might add for those who are not familiar with this guitar, that the craftsmanship that went into building this guitar is remarkable!
As a player she is definitely one of my favorites. I mainly collect mid to late 70 models.

Great to hear that someone else has one of these remarkable guitars. I've never seen one in the flesh so it's been photos only for me.
I can only imagine what the detail is like on your guitar. I used to own a 69' Les Paul custom that weighed in at over 10Ibs so I know what you're talking about.

Guys:
I saw a white L5S at the local Guitar Center, last week. It was pretty well used and had three mini toggles on the top that I don't think were original. Up close, it's a bigger guitar than you think. I can't remember exactly, but they wanted somewhere between $1200-1400.
They also had 2 Performer 200s, 2 LP Customs and a '77 Custom Agent. The CA had a lousy fix on the headstock scroll, absolutely no fret wire left, changed pups and was beat to heck around the edges. They wanted $1100. The other guitars were similarly overpriced. |

Guitar Centers' pricing defies logic. Looked at a new Fender amp for $550 and the exact same amp used for $500. Bet that used amp sits there until they sell it to me for $350.
As far as the used Ibanez's, offer them a fair price. If they don't take it, walk away. |

The white L5S you're talking about....was that an Ibanez and if yes: was it a stock white finish or a refinish job? Important for me to know because I'm still upgrading my upcoming book.
I never heard of white Ibanez L5S models!

Sorry for not being clear about the white L5S. It was a Gibson. I was trying to make the point that the price of this "real" L5S was actually pretty close to the price of a crappy Custom Agent. |

I've seen real a Gibson L-5S sold for €1800.= with an ugly neck repair,

I think $2150.= is a lot of money too, Six!
But the humbucker setup is an advantage.
If you have a serious PU problem, they're easier to replace. I've seen several amateurishly repaired oval ones, and I was never so happy about them.
There haven't been any bids yet, and I doubt if there will be any.
But I must admit, it's beautiful.

Six..These guitars are REALLY nice...Very heavy (its maple) and an acurate clone of the Gibson counterpart. This seller is very optimistic however on the price-you should be able to get two of them for his asking price. I was lucky enough to snag one of these in pretty good shape earlier this year for a grand (US)-which I thought was kinda pricy at the time..at least the one I bought has the Ibanez logo on it..... |

Ginger, they are humbuckers marked with only a serial number..I believe them to be early Super 70's.. |

Dave, I spotted one in London a couple of years back that had the Low Impedence pups in. It had been messed with a bit although it played nice. Too heavy for me though.
