There has been a lot of discussions on the Gibson PAF pickups and I understand that Super 70s were designed to replicate the sounds of the PAFs.
Can anyone tell me the following:
(1) What is your opinion of Super 70s versus Gibson PAFs pups?
(2) Has anyone tried a Super 70 (or any Ibanez pup) on a vintage Gibson Les Paul? If yes, any comments on the sound? I know it may sound ridiculous but who knows somebody may have tried it. This is probably the true test.

Hello "Meranti"!
Funny reading this: I just wondered how my great Tokai Les Paul would sound like with Super '70s in it. This thought came to me because I just fitted two Super '70s in my L6. It's a knock-out sound, I tell you!!!! I can guarantee you that it's worth trying, although I think you must be careful with what guitar you want to do this: I would never put them into a real vintage Les Paul (you don't happen to own a '58 Burst, do you), because it would devaluate the guitar.
I was so lucky to get hold on a couple of still-in-original-package and unused Super 70s (untouched for about 25 years). Still have some in store. If you're interested mail Hasy at http://www.ibanez-vintage-page.de . These pickups scream like hell!!!

Saw your comments also on "Why Do People Hate Ibanez" and the blind test. Agree with you. I have a Ibanez Custom copy bought in '78 and my brother bought the original, Gib**n in '79. To this day, he still prefers my Ibanez.
However, I keep hearing about how great the PAFs are and a friend who has a real '58 and '59 attests to this. Therefore, I'd thought maybe I should ask if anyone has really tried putting Super 70s on a vintage Les Paul. I believe the super 70s are great pups and thanks for the info on the NOS above. I have a couple of the Gib**ns but am still amazed at the Ibanez sound compared to the "originals".
Perhaps the real test should bethe blind test that you suggested but this time with Les Pauls and a sock over the headstock!

I was lucky enough to find a Super 70 pup in an old guitar shop that was closing down in Queen St. Melbourne, down in the pawn shop strip, back in the mid '80s.
It was still in the box, all covered in dust and the guy charged me the original $15 price sticker for it from when he first put it in the bottom of the display case.
It now proudly lives in my translucent blue alder wood strat with a Kent Armstrong lipstick tuber at the neck and a '62 Fender sitting in the middle, and everyone who plays it with that Super 70 wide open is flat out enthusiastic about it.
It was my lucky day to get that pup in that manner, and it's a real nice, I guess typical Ibanez deal. |
