hi there everyone,
I just bought a sunburst Silver Series Strat for $150aus (about $80 US). It seems to be nearly all original parts, except for two of the pickups which look 'whiter' than the neck pick up, which is the same slightly cream colour as the scratch plate. I am still wondering what to do with it. It dosn't stay in tune all that well. I read in posts before that it devalues the guitar to change parts, but I want to have a nice strat that I can use, not just look at. Same goes for the two pickups which i suspect are non-standard. If they are non standard, what pickups would you replace them with keepng in mind it would probably be near to impossible to find stock ibanez strat pickups.

Hi Ado,
If I were you I would bring it to a luthier to have it set up properly. My guess is that the tuning problems are solved then.
I think changing pick-ups is ok as long as you keep the originals. In my opinion the guitar devalues if you change things that cannot be reversed. For instance if you would install one or two humbuckers on your strat.
On the other hand, if you are not a collector and instead you want a player then why not...

Heh heh ... and my '78 Silver Series/Challenger hybrid (blonde ASH strat with tremolo) is about the most "stay in tune" strat I ever came across, it's amazing.
I think you need a set up job by someone with a good touch, Ibanez respond well to fine tuning and if they are the better ones, are very stable guitars. |
