I do have an old les paul copy I bought it for over twenty years ago and paid only $120.
It does have a setneck 22 frets gold plated humbuckers, all hard ware is gold, black covers around the humbuckers, the head stock does not have the open book shape and the only name that was on it was DIA. this name has been scratch off and now it´s only painted with black colour.
what is the name DIA? did ibanez made it? or is it a Aria les paul? help me.

Bjorn,

Some close up photos showing the detail of the hardware and headstock will really help in identifying the guitar. The tuners certainly look to be Ibanez.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Bjorn!

What you seem to have is a guitar similar to the Ibanez set-neck Les Paul model 2650 CS. Have a look at our homepage, under the 1976 catalogue scans. http://www.ibanez-vintage-page.com
I don't know if the brand DIA was made in the same factory where Ibanez was made.
Greetz,
Harry

Now that I have send in those pictures of my mysterious les paul I hope that somebody out there can give me a clue of what kind it is.
can it be a Ibanez that was sold under a different brand? anyway it´s a great guitar and it has been a good friend since the early eighties.

Bjorn:

Did you buy this guitar new or used? Are those the original tuners or replacements?

It does look like a nice setneck copy. Does it have a solid top or is it hollow? Knock on the top, around the bridge and tailpiece to see.

It doesn't have the usual bookend (or moustache) headstock that was common for the Ibanez LP replicas. I'd say it isn't an Ibanez.

Many people are led to believe that ALL Japanese replicas were made in one or two factories. Also, they are told that if their brand was manufactured by the same manufacturer as the Ibanez guitars, then their guitar must really be an Ibanez. This is NOT the truth. The situation is much more complicated.

There were quite a few Japanese manufacturers and there were many, many importers and distributors around the world. There certainly are cases where the manufacturer had a base model guitar that would get sold to various importers/distributors with NO change, except the name on the headstock. Very early on, maybe the mid to late 60s, some guitars carrying the Ibanez name fit this category.

But Hoshino (they own the Ibanez name) started to distinquish their guitars by customizing the manufacturer's base models. After that, Hoshino's next step was to come up with their own designs and just have them manufactured at the plant. This is the evolution that Jeff Hasselberger and Michael Wright describe.

I have never heard of Dia and can't find a reference to it in Michael Wright's Guitar Stories, Vol. 1. Which factory it came from, is a mystery.

Thank´s for your answer,I do also think that this is not a Ibanez, but what is dia? can it be a very early Aria Diamond? didn´t Aria made les paul copys in the early 70´s? I did bought it used and I think that the tuners are original. they do have a little sign on them but it is hard to see on the picture, the top is solid.Maybe the brand dia was only for european market.the search goes on...

This Aria must be my guitar, it has a set neck and the colour was brown sunburst, it is from 1977 so I think the case is closed now.
