hello,
i have the opportunity to buy an old ibanez les paul copy for a symbolic ammount (probably 10 bucks or something like that)
it has been -let's say- played well, so i'll need to do some work to get it play-worthy again.
i was thinking of striping the paint and redoing it, and changing the pickups and electronics.
is this a good idea with a les paul copy?.. or are the appreciated more when left in original paint and electronics?..
it's nothing special by the way; a simple bolt on black lp copy... but for 10 bucks, why not? |

My opinion: if the guitar is only worth $10 because of it's condition, then I think it's a prime candidate for a complete overhaul with no qualms or looking back. Or, you could sell it for all you can get now and put the money into something else. If it had desirable parts you could sell those off and make a profit.
The only exception to the above would be if it's a true lawsuit model with the correct "LP" headstock shape and inlays. Even in beat up shape, a collector will buy it.
On a tangent, I'm not sure how much longer the market will be willing to pay $300+ for old bolt-on LP copies. There's too many of them around from other manufacturers and they share many of the same deficiencies. At some point, the novelty of the Ibanez name will doubtless wear off. What do you all think? |

I agree that the cheaper end of collecting Ibanez is getting a little silly. The scarce models will continue to command higher prices. I guess it depends on how bad you want one. The majority of Ibanez guitars that turn up on ebay appear to be in pretty good condition with maybe some parts missing at most.
What we should hope for is that it doesn't get like the vintage Gibson mania that's out there. I've noticed some real crap turning up on ebay recently. Just because it's vintage, that doesn't necessarily make it a great guitar, especially if the neck has parted company from the body at some point in its life. |
