This is a pre-serialized, circa 74/75 Destroyer. http://img50.photobucket.com/albums/v153/alansmithee/git3_016.jpg http://img50.photobucket.com/albums/v153/alansmithee/git3_022.jpg http://img50.photobucket.com/albums/v153/alansmithee/git3_026.jpg http://img50.photobucket.com/albums/v153/alansmithee/git3_023.jpg I'm no expert, but that looks like an ash grain to me, and the chips reveal a much greyish color wood like ash. Any feedback would be appreciated. Has anyone ever seen a Destroyer made out of Korina? Yes, I saw the "three stooges" post. Thanks! gc2004 |

Great guitar, but not Korina. It's ash or something like that. |

Hi gc2004 You can forget about the "something like that" in Ericsson's reply. It actually IS ash. In a kind of misleading way (but literary correct) the description in the catalogues says: "Korina finish". This means that the ash was finished with a kind of honey-coloured laquer in order to make it look like korina. Still this brought a lot of confusion, because so many people always ask whether the wood is korina or not. Kind greetz Harry |

Well, the EVH statements also add to the confusion. This is from an EVH interview in 1979. It's plain hard to believe that Mr. Brown Sound could possibly be "tone" deaf with regards to tone woods. http://www.vhlinks.com/pages/interviews/evh/gp122979.php GP: Do you still use the chain-sawed guitar? EVH: Yeah. That was originally an Ibanez Destroyer, and it was one of the original ones, which are actually as good or better than the original Gibsons, because they're made out of korina wood, which is real rare, hard-to-work-with wood. It's real light wood, but real toney. Ibanez stopped making them out of that wood, probably because it's too hard to work with. I think now they're making them out of ash, and those are turkeys. |

Note, that last post wasn't meant to be a troll. EVH has said a lot of "interesting" things in the past. All I meant to illustrate was that (regardless of the merits of the ash Destroyers) EVH believe he played a real Korina Ibanez Destroyer...or at least something different from the ash line. |

My understanding was this was ash dyed to look like Korina, EVH's statement aside. Not the first time a rock 'n roller didn't know which end of the joint was lit ;-))) Or to quote Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel: "These go to ELEVEN !!" BigMike |

Hi all! Just because your name is Eddy Van Halen it doesn't have to be necessarily so that everything you say is the truth and nothing but the truth. Stars can be mistaking too, you know. And I refuse to adjust my findings so far just because a certain Eddy said........... Through all those years of digging into Ibanez' 70's history I never heard of the fact that (maybe) the first badge(s) of Ibanez Explorers were made of korina. As far as I know they were always korina-finished Ash. Maybe JD or Orval or Jeff can give some clearness on this matter? Kind greetz, Harry |
