I've run into a dilemma that I hope someone can help me with. The selector switch and (2) pots have given out on my 1976 Ibanez Byrdland. I went ahead and bought a complete wiring harness to replace whats inside mine (I use this guitar in a jazz trio). After extracting the harness and installing the new bought harness I've discovered a multitude of problems. 1. The holes for the controls are much smaller (1/16") and I'm unable to use the American made pots. 2. The shafts of the pots are also shorter (1/8) but I beleive may fits with some preserverence. I've been told by the guy that builds the harness that I need to rem out the holes to make the harness fit. My question is: Are there harnesses that can be bought that will install with out the chopshop attempt. Have any of you replaced the wiring harness in any of your lawsuits and if so, what did you use? This guitar is my pride & joy and I hate to deface it in anyway. TIA for any info that will help!

Dan,

I don't think it's a big deal to fit these and make larger holes in the body. The pots are probably better than the stock Ibanez ones anyway.

The biggest issue is will your original knobs fit snug on the new pot splines. The new ones may be larger than the originals so check this before you start drilling!

I agree with SixSix: you may have to enlarge the holes in the top a very small amount. BUT the pots used in the old Ibanez copies are not that great... AND you can find replacement knobs that will match the old one if the holes inside the old knobs are too small for the shafts of the new pots... ALLPARTS is one place online.

Those Ibanez Byrdland copies are terrific guitars - I've owned TWO... Still looking for one BTW.

I want to thank you guys (six & bigmike) for the advice and heads up. I guess I should have posted before attempting this project. I rimmed out the pot holes and fit the harness. The pot shafts are two short as mentioned but I will use my dremmel tool at a later date to make room for the washers and pointing guides. I soldered all the pickup grounds to the back of the pots and noticed that the front pickup was not grounded. I now have a hum on the front pickup. Should I have grounded it also as the back (to the tailpiece)? This is my first attempt at such a undertaking so bare with the novice questions. Thanks again!

Ground only if you ALLWAYS play trough a grounded socket. If not, it can be dangerous. I heard today, that grounding to the bridge or tailpiece is forbidden on modern guitars. Please verify, because it was quite a surprise to me!

Actually I was going to write you should buy MIJ NOBLE potmeters to get an exact fit. Ttttt to late....

The switch you can buy from Switchcraft.

http://www.switchcraft.com/

It's a lever switch from the 12000 series.

The back pickup had a thin wire running from the bottom casing to the tailpiece (via screws on tailpiece). I had a ES-175 that had this same setup at one time. Do I ground the front pickup the same way? The harness is topnotch components (switchcraft,CTS) with all the wiring correctly soldered. Still I'm getting hum on front pickup. If only I'd have know prior to diving in on the MIJ pots....

If you're sure that your amp will always be grounded, you may connect the ground wire of the front pickup with the screw of tailpiece, the same way you did with the ES-175 and the hum will be gone.
