I just found out about the Ibanez tele replicas. I would be interested in information regarding when they were made, what models and/or options were available, and an assessment of their desirability as an instrument to play, not as a collectable. Also, how do the electronics of 70s Ibanez teles compare to a fender setup of a more recent/present vintage. I am currently shopping for a sweet guitar for an old fart rocker, help me out if you can.

i own a tele thinline amongst many other ibanez
guitars and i find the tele copy to be a poor
copy at best. my advice is to buy a fender jap
or mex version if you are looking for a player.
fernandes also makes an incredible thinline copy.
i owned a mex version and it had an incredible finish.
the hardware was cheap but that could be easily replaced.

I've heard differing opinions of how decent the Ibanez tele copies are. Do they all suck, or, like some i know have said, sound great? Thanks!
I had been interested in obtaining one, but I'm not so sure right now.

yeah, I saw it, it looks very nice. I was wondering about playability and sound quality of them. Any opinions out there?

I have a tele deluxe copy. It plays and sounds just as good as any other "real" tele I've ever owned or played.

Hello all,

I thought I'd add my 2 cents to this one.
Although I have praised the Ibanez Silver Series Strats,I can not do the same one of the Tele copies I have (model 2352).
My made in Japan Fender Tele Custom beats this particular Ibanez Copy hands down in every aspect.
I am not going to give up on it until it is gone over by a good luthier!
The 2352 body is supposed to be a birch top over
solid mahogany but I have my doubts about this one because of its super light weight. It almost feels hollow.I will have a look into that after the guitar is at the shop for a good going over.
It seems funny to think of a Fender type guitars as heavy or light when I play Artists 90% of the time but I am pretty sure most Fender guys lust for the biggest necks with the lightest bodies
Also Orval mentioned above in this thread,I played a Mexican Tele that impressed the hell out of me, yet the 3 next to it did not.
It turns out that my Aria thinline copy plays & sounds about as poorly as my 2352 does so it too will be going for evaluation before I give up on it and sell them off.

Now if I could only figure out what would have happened if the Japs did not bomb Pearl Harbor, and we did not nuke em,would there be an Ibanez collectors forum.............??????????

Hello all!
I own an Ibanez telecaster custom copy (with a humbucker in neck position and a single coil in bridge position) and I must say that I'm very pleased with it. The sound of the single coil pickup is good: with a little distortion and chorus effect I sound exactly like Rick Parfitt!
The humbucker pu is not so very good. I only use it when I play clean. Both pickups are quite microphonic, so you have to be careful not to use too much distortion (or you have to move away from your amplifier at least 20 yards.....).
It has a very heavy body (it is heavier than most Les Pauls) and I find the neck is a fine one to play. It's maple with a maple cap (fretboard), so there's no skunk stripe in the back. Adjustment of the trussrod is at the headstock. Mine is black with a black pickguard and is built in december 1975. It's all original, except for the missing "ashtray" pickup/bridgecover.
Greetings, Harry

harry, looks like I got the same guitar!
even missing the ash tray, and except for the incredibly crude {but also neat} tuners
I find this is the coolest tele copy ever, and I have owned a few, its very well made as the japanese models were { great wood... pots ..switches.. wireing}got it tuned to open G , great KEITH RICHARDS set up.
as for the model # can you tell the year by that?

Hi TW!
If your Ibanez copy has no serial number stamped in the metal plate of the body/neckjoint your guitar is from before mid 1975. In that case only "made in japan" is stamped in it. If there is a serial number, the capital indicates the month of production (A=january, B=february and so on) and the first two digits are the year in witch your guitar was built. The other digits indicate the rank of your guitar that month.
greetings, Harry.

HI HARRY,
your right, the plate has the numbers b773574
telling the month, year and so on.
how long did they make this model?
and how do YOU compare it to the mighty FENDER TELE CUSTOM?

Hi TW
As far as I know the Ibanez Telecaster Custom has been in production from about 1974/1975 until 1978 (after the well-known lawsuit Ibanez stopped making copies). Compared to a real Fender I would say that the Ibanez doesn't differ much in playability and "feel", but the Fender definitly sounds better. However: I really like my Ibanez and I wouldn't miss it for the World!
greetings, Harry.

I recently purchased a black Ibanez Silver Series Tele on EBay with a humbucker in the neck position and a single coil in the bridge. It has a maple neck. It is one of the finest playing guitars I own. I can't comment on the sound of the original Ibanez pickups as this guitar had been modified with an old Gibson PAF(neck) and Seymour Duncan(bridge)installed....which sounds fantastic. I also own another Ibanez Tele circa 77 a Challenger.. It plays and sounds better than my two "real" Fender Telecasters. After two successful Ibanez purchases, I am convinced that the best telecaster value short of a multi thousand dollar vintage instrument is an Ibanez Tele...forget brand name they simply play better.

Ditto that.

i own two of the Ibanez teles.
the standard (with the tele standard single coil setup) and a deluxe with the humbuckers (split 3x3 offset pole pieces).

They play fantastically and really scream.
The standard is way more tele than any Fender I've played.

Although all the lawsuits I own really sound good the tele's stand out in tone.

Hi, i have found a dissabled Ibanez tele and was wondering if anyone has informations about it: The fingerboard is Rosewood on a maple neck, the Ibanez logo is abalon inlay on the palette. Neck cover plate has no serial number, only made in japan is written, tuners are very pour kluson copies, metallic truss rod cover. It came with two single coils (very bad), bridge had ashtray cover but it's missing. the body was sanded, so no info about it. Pickup selector is gibson like (3 pos)

Here's a catalog page I snagged

tele

It sounds like the Ibanez teles were hit or miss, and recommendations for a cheap tele copy? I want to see if the tele thing is for me before I build a Warmoth one. I look at Fernandez. It seems you can pick up a Schecter for a little less than 3 bills.

I used to have the 2352 Custom. It had a Fender Humbucker. It did sound like a tele only a bit thinnner probable because the body was really light. I had problems getting used to the shape of the body and found it not very comfortable to play.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi John!

Did you notice the 2352 Custom that's for sale on German Ebay now? Has the same laquer that yours had and also a Fender neck pickup. Is that guy selling yours again?

I am a little unsure about the body shape. That's why I want to pick up a cheapo and live with it for a while to see if I like it. It's a little too chunky and square in profile.

I got a 72-73 Antoria thinline 2368 in a pawnshop recently for £48......the neck pup had been changed as had the pickguard (to brushed aluminium of all things!!)...It is an astounding tele..far and away the easiest to play and best sounding I've ever had in my hands!!!

Hello!

I have an Aria thinline tele copy. Check www.therathole.org site.

Ibanez labeled it 2368, but they look the same in overall, maybe some small cosmetical differences.Aria is 1529 or something like that.

Mine is very very light, hollow, resonant. When I bought it, the e string was gone and the frets were worn to the max still I knew I had to get it!!!
Neck pickup is muddy, the bridge pickup is the coolest. Both wound around 4,5KOhms.Bridge pup is weaker!Unpotted! This guitar taught me that it's still possible to find something good and not unloud a truck load of cash at the same time!!!

Just my 200cents hehehehehe!!!!

I just found this battered 2384 in a pawn shop and brought it home. Australian $150. I had read this thread before i bought it and i nearly didnt after the negative feedback re the teles.

I plugged it in when i got home and this thing just screams. I love the sound this baby gives me. Much better sound than my AS200. Really clean, mellow and great sustain. I cant get over how well it performs. Wish it had a wider neck but wow for sound. The original pickup, the neck one is just beautiful.
Can anyone help me regarding knobs for this. I cant tell from the catologue picture posted by funckle above if it has the plastic or chrome type. Also mine has a replaced bridge but is missing the cover. ARE THESE PARTS OR SIMILAR AVAILABLE.
I am going to strip the green off and restore it to its ash finish, but that well played worn neck is priceless. It can stay. No serial No. just made in Japan. I guess 74-75 vintage.

Sven, no someone has recently stripped it back and put the green finish on it. I think the page you posted above shows all they had on offer for this period. This was certainly a 2384 which is a natural ash finish. I dont mind the green but I also like the ash finish. Any ideas on what the knobs should be. Are these correct?.
