Hi ya'll. I'm new to this forum. I must say, I've been looking for something like this for quite awhile. I have noticed a few posts on this forum about the Dan Armstrong plexiglass replicas. So I just had to put my 2 cents in. I have an Ibanez DA replica bass. I bought this guitar brand new back in May 1972 in Berlin while I was in the Army. As you can probably tell from the pix, it's got some mileage. Everything is original except the brass nut near the head and of course the washer around the input jack. If memory serves me correctly, I believe I paid around $200 for it new. For some time now I have been trying to find a new, tunable bridge for it. Any ideas? Rick

More about the bridge... Most bridges I have looked at put the E & G strings spread out too wide (off the neck). Also I'm assuming that the posts that mount the bridge to the body must align with the holes already in the body. This has been a difficult search but I'm sure that someone here can point me in the right direction. I've attached a closeup of the original bridge. I know, it's in sad shape but like I said, it's got a lot of mileage.

Hi Rick53 Wow, you really have a nice and rare bird there. As a fanatic Ibanez collector I MUST strongly advice you to leave the bass the way it is, in spite of the heavily worn bridge. If you'd put on a replacement part you would cause me (and other collectors) a heartache. Now we come to talk about it.....do you wanna sell? I'd like to have this one in my collection! I already have the guitar version, so it would make a great couple! Willing to pay a fair and good price. Please contact me: G.Kruisselbrink1@chello.nl Kind greetings, Harry Kind greetings |

Rick: In case you haven't seen it already, here's a scan of the original catalog page for the Dan Armstrong guitar and bass: http://www.break-even.org/ibzscans/1971/71-11.jpg That is one of the simplest bridges I've seen. |

Can anyone identify the amps behind the guitars in that scan? They look cheesy! |

I was just playing my Armstrong and realized that the Ibanez is not really a "lawsuit" copy of the bass,it's a different layout and bridge compleatly.I think it's the first time I've seen possible upgrading by Ibanez on a copy. Here's a real DA layout: The black one needs some work but I need to score some Buytrate to play around with before I start. There were only 8 made in black so it's a pretty rare one I don't want to take chances with |

Rick, why do you feel you need a tunable bridge? Is the intonation that far out? Usually on these type bridges, you can move the saddle around by loosening a screw under the bridge plate, is this not the case on yours? I would not mess with another type of bridge that would alter the mounting. You may get a Gibson EB-0 type bridge to fit by filing out the slots a bit. I would suggest replacing the studs with metric stop tailpiece guitar studs that fit the same thread, but I would NOT try to remove the stud bushings from the body. With a plexi body this old, that would be asking for trouble. If all else fails, I suppose you can sent it out to be rechromed. Eric |
