You know, you might want to hold off on getting the 7620 if you really want the 7BK. The BK for the most part is the least desirable of the old UVs; in other words, they shouldn't be too expensive. In theory, you should be able to pick one up for no more than a new RG-7 (especially considering you'd spend the extra money to customize the pickups, get the knobs, pickguard, and if you're really into it, a seven string single coil). Then again, the added cost may be worth it just to have the All Access Neck Joint.

Check Jemsite Classifieds, E-Bay, ICW, and your local music stores. You might be surprised how often the BKs pop up.

Kyle

BTW, there's one mentioned for trade right now on Jemsite. It's a refinish and no longer black, but it's a start, eh? :)

Well, I don't have anything to say about the 7-string. But I have some suggestions about multi-fx. You can definitely pick up a used Rocktron Chameleon for around $400 or so. The overall voicing of the clean and dirty channels is a modern and processed, but still very cool. You can get some ridiculous amounts of gain. It has pitch-shifting, but it's not "intelligent." The intervals are fixed, unless you use an expression pedal. It does "ok" for "vintage" type sounds, but that's not why you're buying a Rocktron processor in the first place!

I'm pretty sure the newer Digitech guitar preamp/processors have harmonizers. But I don't know how they will fit into your budget of $400 (is that $400 US or $400 Can?). If you're open to going with used gear, that's another story.

Otherwise, I think Boss makes a rackmount fx unit that basically has various Boss pedals' sounds, but in a one space rack unit.

yes i am from canada ...and thats 400 can...and hell yeah im lookin for used.....
i dont really wanna buy new only for the fact that its sooo much more expensive.

ill look for the rocktron rackmout you sugested and the boss one...

i used a peavy rackmount a while ago from someone and it had amazing •••• on it.....everything..and the best distortion i have ever heard
but i dont remeber the name of it....and the guy was askin 1500$ for it....and it was so old so i told him to go jump LOL

but thank you very much...i need this advice so much ..thanks

Hey, back to the 7-String issue.... get a 7620 if you can... over the UV7... I love my UV, and am a huge fan of those guitars, but the 7BK was nothing too special. With the 7620, you're getting the nice trem system, the AANJ, the updated pickups... all the goods, and it'll probably be new and under warranty. If you're getting something below the 7620, I suppose shoot for the(dare I say) RG7421, it's the fixed bridge version... the only reason I say this is because the other models will have the low-trs system.... which is notorious for going out of tune. It's not a bad trem, but you can do much better(eg low-pro 7).

Oh, with rack processors, if all you want is distortion and harmonizing... I would just suggest getting a good amp for the distortion. If you're a gain nut, you can get a 5150 used for around $400 easily.

With harmonizing... that's a tough one, good units are hard to find. I have an Eventide 3000 series, nothing really compares to it. I haven't found many cheaper rack units that can come close to competing with it. Might I suggest just going for a BOSS super shifter? You can find a new one for like $130, if I remember correctly.

I don't know if anyone else is interested, but here's my input:

#1. Making an RG a Universe? Start at www.jemsite.com (I can help but praise this site over & over). Look for the vendor's link. Jeannies' pickguard is one place, and there are some inlay places that might drill out the pearl inlay and glue in the green inlay. Also www.allparts.com sells replacement parts(knobs). As far as the pickups go, I don't think Dimarzio is doing those colors anymore, but you might want to inquire. I personally like fixed bridges but I like the look of the tremolos. I forgot that they use a weaker trem on the cheaper models. Don't get those unless you are strapped for cash.

#2. Harmonizers. I have a Rocktron Replifex with a midi controller. It switches my distortion in my amp for me through the unit and has a single harmony. You can also save patch #1 for an octave down, and #2 as a perfect fourth down. Midi is very useful. Digitech reissue whammy has midi controls and harmony. Otherwise Eventide if you got cash. If you don't have a amp or head, go with the new digitech model rackmount and add a power amp.

#3. I notice everybody loves the tremolos over the hardtails. I say if you are buying them because it stays in tune, I recommend a hardtail and invest in Sperzel Locking tuners (maybe through Carvin--they might have a 7string set). Because changing strings sucks on tremolos and if you riff hard the springs can vibrate and generate a weird resonance through your guitar. I say buy a trem version if & only if you plan on doing dives or using the trem at all. I own a S5407 (original) and a RG7421 hardtail. I like the RG's hardtail slightly more than I do the trem Sabre.

#4. Lastly if you don't want to butcher a good RG and you don't care about brand names, start a custom one through the jemsite link (Ed Wood custom bodies & Herc Fede--for multicolor swirls). The owner of the jemsite has a cool custom he made (under GC custom in the Jem/Universe gallery). Haven't made one yet but I'm itching to do one.

Laters--
James

I recently purchased a used rg7621, and I'd like to make sure that it actually IS a 7621 and not a 7421. I want to find out if it actually has the dimarzio blaze pickups in it. Can someone please describe what the blaze pickups look like? The pickups in this guitar are black. The metal posts on the pickups are also black, and these posts have hex-shaped holes in them. Are there any other differences between the 7621 and the 7421 besides pickups?

RG7s can be picked up for very very short cash these days. I bought an RG7420 off of eBay for $200. It has some dings on it but for the money it put a 7 string in my hands faster and cheaper than I ever expected. Alot of shops I've seen have a glut of RG7s that they've received as trade ins and are attempting to get rid of them for pretty low dough. The lowest I've seen however is $450.00 or so. But keep in mind, this is a guitar shop. They probably are offering half of that for trade in.

That said I can honestly say that the bridge of the RG7420 isn't nearly as bad as someone had previously mentioned. It's not top notch but it is certainly functional. Getting it to stay in tune is actually no harder than getting just about any other floating tremolo to stay in tune. It takes some time and a little patience and you should do fine with it.

Additionally I have to admit that I hate the DiMarzio pickups in the RG7620. They sound way too high-endy and don't let the instrument really push the low-end which it was made for.
