I bought a used Roadstar II with a 1984 neck plate, which did not seem to have the original PUs (according to the catalogue from 1985 it's a Deluxe 440, that should be two SCs with visible magnets and a double blade HB, it had two Ibanez SCs with the plain black plastic surface, could be Super 5 or 7, and a Humbucker that feedbacked at high volumes, something an original Ibanez never does!) So I tried a few things, and I finally ended up with: an Ibanez S1 single coil from an RG model in the neck position, a DiMarzio HS2 wired in SC mode in the middle, and a Peavey Humbucker from a Vandenberg model. the switch is from a Reb Beach model and has 4 layers, which enables me to have these 5 sounds: bridge HB, bridgeHB split + middleSC, bridgeHB split + neckSC, middleSC + neckSC, neckSC on its own. It's not possible to have the middleSC alone, but I've never liked that sound, so that's the perfect solution for me! I must say, the Peavey HB is really fat and rich in harmonics, and the S1, which I did not like in the middle position of my RG550 sounds really good in the neck position, better than the DiMarzio HS2, which was too dark and soft. What do think about it? Anyone here who had to install PUs into a Roadstar, what did you do? |
