Have a look at these photos: http://www.corporateit.co.nz/luke/ibanez540s00.JPG http://www.corporateit.co.nz/luke/ibanez540s01.JPG Hi. This is my Ibanez 540s guitar. I have a few questions regarding it. I am presuming it is an Ibanez S series 540 Sabre, is this correct? It's serial number is F006182, made in Japan. What year is it? I have been searching for a guitar photo on the internet of it, however the closest I can find is exactly the same except it only has 1 tone knob, wheras mine has two, why is this? If anyone could help me understand these things about my guitar a little better, that would be greatly appreciated. |

By the looks of the second photo, it has a square heel with a metal plate. Can you verify this? Although I cannot find an exact match in the catalogs, I'm going to say this is a '90 450S, and the 3rd knob has been added. I don't think it's a 540 because it doesn't have the "custom made" logo on the fretboard, and it has dot inlays, not ovals. -Sven |

And the EMG pickups were added as well. If you want to do some detective work, you can view the catalogs at ibanezrules.com. The serial number would most likely make it a '90, (or possibly a 2000 if it has an all access neck joint). Keep in mind that most Ibanez guitars were made the year before the catalog the appeared in, so it could be a '91 model. |

Visually, it's a 1989 540S except for the middle knob. See pages 10 & 11 in the '89 catalog. Steve |

You are correct Mr. Roadstar. I didn't think to check the '89 catalog! I think if you were to remove the knobs and unscrew the nuts from the pots, you could tell if the 3rd hole was drilled after production. It would have finish in the inside edges if it was done before spraying. |

Okay, thanks for your help, its definitely a 540s, though, as this is labelled on the back of the head. It must be about an 89-90's. |

It was definitely made in 1990, based on the SN, although it appears in the '89 catalog as Steve pointed out. |

I took out the middle tone knob and compared the paint underneath to the other two knobs. It sure would appear that the middle knob was added after it was manufactured. |
