Here's my latest purchase on eBay.

http://www.qksrv.net/click-1802666-10381315?loc=http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D7355748804

From the auction, it appears to be a great deal, no? Anyway. I've been edging toward a JEM for a while now. I won't go into my rationale, but anyway. I get this 'great deal' and here's what I find.

Anyway, this isn't a sympathy thread. Just one persons experience on what looked like a great deal at the time. I have Paypal protection as well as Visa protection. And to be honest, the rest of the guitar is in very good condition. Just this one little glitch. Hopefully he'll return the guitar and not make it a hassle.

Great deal! I was playing one yesterday. It had been dropped so the price with the ding was around $1,200. Very nice playing guitar. I especially like the neck. Great feel. Prestige necks are wonderful. This one is thinner and I have small hands, so it fits just right!

Enjoy!

Brent:

Are you saying that the guitar was damaged in shipping or that the seller must have known about it and not represented it accurately?

I'd say that: "The Guitar is in perfect cosmetic condition and comes with case" would preclude a broken neck!

John:

No, it shipped in a UV1000C case. The case isn't damaged, and the way the guitar lays in the case, the head of the guitar is suspended by the neck. I'm guessing it would have had to damage the case to cause that amount of compression to bend the headstock forward to crack the neck.

The seller, of course, could cry shipping damage. But I believe the guitar shipped with the crack. The crack has some dust and dirt in it (as noted by the dark outline in the picture), so it looks like the damage occured some time ago.

I'm guessing the seller either didn't know about it, or misrepresented it. The majority of the auction is innacurate with regards to the neck. All that text is straght off the Ibanez website. This is a 2002 model with an ebony fretboard and a one piece maple neck with scarf joint.

Brentm: sorry about my earlier post. I hadn't completely read your post and didn't see the part about the crack. I hope everything works out.

Michael - no problem, I figured as such!

Anyone know what Ibanez charges for a factory replacement neck? Not a whole lot of 'parts' JEMs out there. There's several ways this situation could play out. So I'm just trying to gather as much info as possible. Such a shame too...

Here's another picture. I took some photos and put them on my site for the Paypal dispute.

Nah, just a JEM 555 neck and it's cracked too.

FWIW - I spoke with Hoshino and a new JEM 7VWH neck runs 659.99. I'm going to propose that the seller pay for this.

The deal is I send the guitar to Hoshino, they do the replacement and deform (destroy) the old neck.

Good luck. Hopefully the seller is a reasonable person.

Was it insured when shipped? I recently sent a speaker cab from NY to CA and it arrived damaged. USPS ended out paying for the complete repair. Definitely insure when shipping!

Michael - I paid for insurance, but the seller didn't insure the shipment! Fundametally, I have issues with the whole insurance thing, but I won't go there now. The seller said he'd pay for the new neck, which is promising!

Now my only problem is dealing with the right people. I guess Chesbro is the distributor for dealers west of the Rockies, and Hoshino is east of the Rockies.

Hoshino won't deal with me directly and I have to go through a distributor. I'm going to call Hoshino and see if there is any wiggle room on this policy. I'd feel better about Hoshino replacing the neck than Chesbro. This is only based on reputation... I could be second guessing the situation.

I should rephrase. I have to go through a deal to get to a distributor..

Ugh...what a pain. The seller was very wrong for not insuring it...especially when you paid for it.

Yeah, saga continues. Chesbro doesn't stock the neck. Guitar Center can deal with Hoshino directly, so I have to go through them. No slags on GC needed.

Maybe dealing with some of the smaller shops (ie: the ones that sold Cowboys) is better?

Well, Chesbro would order the neck from Ibanez Japan, which could take up to 6 months. So going through GC speeds up the process considerably. We'll see. I know we've all had our experiences with GC, mostly bad, some good.... so anything can happen.

Just to bring some closure to this thread.

I sent the guitar back to the owner. I wasn't able to strike a fair deal for the guitar. Before I shipped it, I removed the strings and put some saran wrap around the crack. Tremolo went into the gadget compartment of the UV1000C case...

I put a sheet of saran wrap around the crack to prevent the wood from swelling with the humidity. Hard not to want to take care of a guitar in your possesion. Even if it was temporary...

well, I guess they're all temporarily in our possesion aren't they? just some longer than others.
