Can anyone tell me what Ibanez used as a finish on my SA160QMAM? It's quilted maple with an amber finish. I have a friend who wants to put a similar finish on a dashboard in his hot rod. He wants to accent the red of the exotic wood he's using, without covering it up completely. |

Mrblanche, Finishes like that are achieved in multiple steps. My guess would be that they used an orange or amber stain on the bare wood - this would soak more into the open parts of the grain, highlighting the figure. They may even lightly sand the wood after staining to amplify the effect (with an open grained wood, you could use an orange tinted grain filler to highlight the figure). Then they would seal and level the wood with several coats of clear finish. With a finish surface sanded dead level, they would apply a coat of clear tinted with yellow. Then they would shoot the burst on the edge with cherry tinted clear. Then finish it up with a few coats of clear. They used to use Lacquer to shoot these kind of finishes, Ibanez is probably using Polyester. But you could use an automotive or furniture grade conversion finish or polyurethane. You van find the tints at StewMac: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Finishing_supplies/Colors,_tints,_and_stains/1/Color Tone_Concentrated_Liquid_Stains/Pictures.html#details -Sven |
