I inherited a 1990 EX series - model 140. I like the neck and it's comfortable. The pickups are OK,sort of, but I need to replace the pots and switch. When I used the vibrato - it goes way out of tune. The tuners,... suck. I'm using it with 12s tuned to D right now. I'm more into to using the vibrato like Robin Trower, not too hard - no Stevie Vai stunts. Any suggestions where to start? Thanks |

Robert, A standard trem will stay in tune if set up properly, and work great for subtile trem work. The keys are using locking tuners, and making sure the strings can slide easily in the nut. If the tuners are not locking, slap a set of Gotoh lockers on there, and use a minimum of winding, only a half a turn. If you're using 12s, the nut grooves are probably too narrow. They will bind the string, so that it cannot easily return to pitch. carefully widen the slots using nut files, or pieces of wound guitar string super-glued to the edge of popsickle sticks. Once the string slides freely through the slot (but cannot move from side to side), apply a little lube - tri-flow, graphite from a pencil or nut-sauce. |
