I found a mint Roadstar RG420BK a few months ago and I've grown especially fond of this one. It was all original but after a month of playing I decided to replace the IBZ pickups with PAF pro and Fred pups. The IBZ pups made some serious thunder for bar chord rock but I'm more of a solo player and need good tone. Anyway, my question is two part. How rare is this particular model? After doing a LOT of surfing around I can't find any info not even any Harmony Central reviews! There are reviews for the more common H/S/S RG440. My main question is how to care and feed the oiled neck so it doesn't dry out or warp? And what a lovely neck it is I might add! I like this guitar way better than the newer RG design. I'm posting a stock photo until I have time to take some proper photos of my actual guitar.

Thanks!

If it hasn't dried out or warped in 20 years, what makes you think it's going to now? All 400 series '86 Roadstars had the same neck and I've never heard or read anything about them having problems. I've never done anything other than wipe them down. The two I have now (RG420CI, RG440PR) are just fine.

Thanks, Steve

Just wanted to properly care for the neck.

Is the 420 harder to come by than the 440?

I see the 440 model all the time.

I don't have production numbers, but experience makes me think the 420 was produced in smaller numbers.

Tonedef bought one of my RG420's. Wish I could talk him out of it....

Steve, I found a Roadstar in a local pawnshop today for $125. It is the RG440 model. Blue and black 2 tone. Its in decent shape but missing the term arm and the string locks at the nut. I'm thinking of buying it. Do you have any likes or dislikes about this model? The serial # starts with F706 I guess its an 87.

Freak,

I like all the '86 400 series guitars. I'm making a new pickguard for my RG440 changing the pickups to a hum/hum configuration. My dislike for single coils is pretty well documented...

Yeah, F7***** would be an '87. Does it have the Blade or Duckbill headstock?

Duckbill I think. I don't know if it has duosound or not but I know its very filthy The humbucker has a sticker that says (ibanez Vintage). I'm probably going to buy it.
