I bought a nice SA160QMAM a while back, and it is a gorgeous guitar. Then, I sort of "accidentally" bought an RG120. Is it my imagination, or does the RG have a just slightly wider (but not thicker) neck on it? I've found I really like it quite a bit, and maybe I'll sell these two to finance a nice RG if that's the case. If I do that, what would be your recommendation for the RG? Someone previously said in another thread that they thought the "good" models started at the 550? |

Mrblanche, It's not your imagination, The SA neck is 1 5/8" at the nut, like a strat or pre-1960 gibson, and fairly deep for an Ibanez. A much more traditional feeling strat like neck. The RG neck is one of the flattest necks available, and is 1 11/16" wide at the nut. Check out the specs: RG: Scale 648mm/ 25.5" a : Width at Nut 43mm b : Width at Last Fret 56mm c: Thickness at 1st 19mm d : Thickness at 12th 21mm Radius 400mmR SA: Scale 648mm/ 25.5" a : Width at Nut 42mm b : Width at Last Fret 56mm c: Thickness at 1st 19.5mm d : Thickness at 12th 21.5mm Radius 400mmR

Gee, you wouldn't think 1mm would feel that different, would you? |

It seems like it wouldn't. But it does. |

i own the SA/ SAS models & a few RGs- they do feel different when it comes to the neck, despite a minute variation in measurements. however, i feel that one cannot replace the other. |

So...I never got a recommendation on what model of RG I should look for. I'd like to find a bargain, maybe even something needing refinishing, but I would like to find a quality instrument. Doesn't the neck/body shape change at some level (550?)? |

As an added question, does any other Ibanez guitar have the same neck as the RG? |

Mrblanche: It's difficult to answer your question. The exact neck dimensions depend on what time period you are referring to. For instance, the dimensions on the RG550/560s back in '88 thru '90 were: Scale 648mm/ 25.5" Width at Nut 43mm Width at Last Fret 57mm Thickness at 1st 17mm Thickness at 12th 20mm Lots of other specs have changed over the nearly 20 years that the RG series has been around. |

http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/discus/messages/21/13563.html?1138326973 I may be selling this one again. It's the "I promised the wife I'd sell one" story. For a recommendation, I think the anything from thh 550 and up is a good choice. |

Thanks for the info. I guess I need to study the specs carefully. I'll probably sell the RG120, not that it's worth much (although it looks really good), and try to find a higher model in rough shape. My wife might commit guitaricide if I bought anything pricey (for her, anything over $200 is pricey). Hey...$5 doesn't buy much steak, but it buys lots of beans. At least, that's what I tell her! |

Mrblanche: I would think that it's going to be difficult to find an RG550 or higher for $200. Maybe a project or beater? That is more like the price range for a mid-series Roadstar. The thing that really scares me about a cheaply priced RG or S, from the late 80s or early 90s, is screwed up trem studs. There's not a lot you can do to revitalize a guitar with that kind of problem, that won't cost more than the guitar is probably worth. The guitar would probably be worth more as parts on ebay. |

Johns: which part of the studs are you referring to? The V groove variance, or the ovaling of the basswood? |

Brent: Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant the ovaling of the basswood. |

I guess technically speaking, I have the ability to make a whole new body myself. I've seen bodies on e-bay. In fact, there's an RG760 on there now, I think. Yeah, could sell the SA AND the RG, and get about enough to get a 550 and up, used. Not sure I want to do that, though. If someone has a rough one they'd like to sell, feel free to contact me! |
