I'm a little puzzled by the fretboard on this guitar. It looks darker than rosewood and has nice action. But it doesn't feel quite like my 2619 which I know has an ebony fretboard. I've heard the term "ebonized" thrown around. Has anyone heard this term and do you know what it means? thanks Ib |

Ib, as far as I know, an "ebonized" (rosewood) fretboard looks like a real ebony one because of the "paint," but as you play more of the guitar, you'll find the painting starts to fade away gradually. Anyway, the term means darkening the color of the wood material. |

Check the color of the fretboard above the 12th fret on the bass side. Since most players do not hang out there as often as other parts of the board, the color should be close to what was original. It may be a little lighter than the rest of the fretboard, but still dark due to factory dying. I noticed this on my '82 AR105 and it took viewing it in bright sun to see that it was not truly ebony. As Hasenobu stated, some rosewood boards were treated with a darkening dye to resemble ebony, thus the term 'ebonized'. |
