First of all, this is my first post so let me start by saying hello to everybody. :-) I came across this one on Ebay and I'm trying to make it out. I've never seen one like this before. First off the serial number is F7044. Judging from that serial I can see that they were a limited production. Of course the 1987 catalogs are sketchy because of the Jems, but after searching a 1998 catalog, the closest thing I could equate this one too is the Power or the Saber even though this one has rounder edges on the body than the Power. I'm wondering if anybody has seen this one before and if you could tell me what it is. Thanks.

Welcome at ICW Jen,

Your question is a little difficult to answer, without seeing a picture, but I understand it's about a Sabre...

First you should do is: read the Formatting chapter! So click on Formatting on the left of this page.
Then go to Images and try to upload pictures in the Testing Area. If you know how it works, you can present us a picture. In the meantime I'll try to find it on eBay, before it's gone.

Oh yeah, what works even faster: select the ITEM NUMBER, press Ctrl-C (copy), then go to this thread and put your cursor in the "Enter Item number" box. Then press Ctrl_V (Paste) and click Add Ebay.
This way you create an ICW friendly link to the ad.

OOOOPs Thanks. :-) You suprised me when you called me by name. How did you know it?

I added the item number but I didn't click the ADD EBAY button so I guess that's why it didn't post. Here's the item number here. Item number: 140082961438

Here's the link to the auction
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140082961438&ssPageName= STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=004

It is listed as a Roadster, but were Roadsters even made in 1987?? I thought they were replaced by the Roadstar??

Anyway, I can't afford to jump on this one now, but it looks good and with it being limited production I'm sure the value is even more. Maybe one of you all will get it and tell me how it plays. :-)

I'm looking to get a Roadstar, but I just can't make up my mind which model to get. I'm sure I'll wind up with a collection of them, but I'm really having a hard time deciding which one to try first. I have heard that the original Edge bridges are the best, but then it's deciding which pickups?? Ay decisions decisions. Any ideas?? What are you favorites of the Roadstars??

Floridanative:

First, welcome to ICW.

Here's the result of pressing the "Add eBay" button:

http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-1751-2978-71/1?AID=5463217&PID=1802666&mpre=ht tp%3A//cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D140082961438

As you can see, it's a slightly different URL to the eBay auction. That's because it's specially crafted to help ICW by giving us credit for the referral to the auction. It's an easy way to help the out the forum and the members.

Back to the auction. It is an '87 Roadstar II Pro540 Radius. The Radius model later turned into the JS (Joe Satriani) series.

I have an '84 RS1300 that I really enjoy. It has 2 Super 58s and Duo-sound circuitry, so it's very versatile. It's minty fresh and bright flaming red! (Think Ferrari...vroom, vroom :-))

Some people don't like the Pro Rockr trem (the Edge was better, if you are into dive bombing), but I don't mind it. Sometimes, I think a hard tail version would be more ideal.

OOPS. My bad. Thanks again. I will be sure to press the "add ebay" button in the future.

Thanks for the info on the guitar. Man, I wish I had the funds to pick it up.

May I ask you Johns how you like the Super 58's? What kind of sound do they give you?

Floridanative:

The Japanese-made Super 58s are pretty universally praised as great all-around humbuckers. They are modeled after Gibby PAFs.

Some people are much more discriminating about pickups and are after a very specific sound. So the Super 58s sound average to them. Maybe that's the beauty of them: they fit into a bunch of different guitars, from solid to hollow and do very nice job.

The single coil setting wouldn't fool a Strat player, but it adds variety. I like the Super 58s with Tri-sound switching in the OOP mode. Just a cool tone.

What does OOP mode mean?

A couple of good examples of vintage and contemporary (semi)hollow and solid body guitars with Super58s, please. With and without single coil setting etc.

I looked it up in my old 1988 pricelist, and it turns out to be quite expensive: 1895 guilders was more expensive than the American Standard Stratocaster (which was 1710 guilders) in 1988.

I think it's a beautiful and well built guitar. Made by Fuji Gen. I don't know if the picture shows the complete serial number, but the "F" is a good sign. They made my Fender Stratocaster that very same year.

Kaszon, OOP stands for "Out Of Phase", a hollow, nasal tone.. Switching eg. two humbuckers so, that when both are on, and out of phase gives you the distinctive Peter Green - style blues sound..
Juha, AM- and AS- series Artists for example.. And Scofield signatures.Older Super58s (ne vanhat) are extremely versatile and good PAF-clones (just a personal opinion) :-)

I've got an AR300 and an MC350NT, both equipped with Super '58 Tri Sound. Mostly I use the PUs in humbucking mode, rarely in singe or parallel. I have to buy a stratocaster for that sound, never able to cover with a mahagony Ibanez...
