I'm so happy, I just got a new UV777-BK. Only one problem: it's a real bear to tune!!! Tune one string, and the others go WAY off. I realize that the extra low string combined with the floating bridge might make it a little more tough, but this seems abnormally so. Especially since the Edge tremolo system is supposed to be so great. I've had several 6-string guitars with quality floating bridges that were far easier to tune, and they pretty much stayed in tune even after some heavy whammy usage.
Does anyone else with the Universe have this problem?

I have an original 1991 universe, and had the exact same problem you seem to have. i'm no expert, and still today have some trouble tuning it; to make it worse, the screws at the nut are completely worn off, which means that the guitar doesn't stay in tune so good.
I can only give you two advices, first, try to tune the strings in this order: high e, low b, high b, low e, g, a, d. once you tuned the high e and low b, tune the high e again before tuning the high b, repeat this with all the strings until they are all in tune, it seems tedious but i its the faster way i found (it usually takes me 10-15 minutes).
the other thing i can tell you is to be carefull when you adjust the screws, you don't want to ruin the locking nut.
if anyone knows a faster or better way of tuning a universe please post it.

I am selling my UV777 for this very reason. I am not about to spend my practice time tuning my guitar over and over again. I am through with Floyd Rose's as well. I think their tremelo's are a big pain and not worth it. I have tried to keep this guitar tuned and thought I was doing something wrong. Ebay, here I come! Give me a fixed bridge! Ibanez, shame on you for a $2200 list price guitar that wont stay in tune.

I recently bought a 2004 IBENHAD UV777 and the tuning is horrific at best. I guess it is what i get for buying one blind howevver the thing never ,EVER stays in tune for more than 2 minutes. and if you acutally use the whammy....

forget about it!

i learned this wonderful bit as well. if you are tuning and happen to say lean one way or the other (forward or backward) the thing will fall out about 15 cents either direction. now i have heard of floating bridges being a bit picky but this is crazy!

since i have bought it i have spent approx. 45 % of my time tuning it and that is a no win for me. another one for ebay. and since i am going to meet and speak with steve when he hits Atl. later this week i am going to get his true opinion of the UV777 off the factory line....

I have a UV777BK as well and it is a lot harder to tune than a regular 6 string floater just bacause if the extra tremolo width. My UV isn't even close to set-up right now and I don't know if I have a week of free time to get it in tune:-)
