Alright, a few questions here about the RG 550, first off, when did they start reinforcing the necks with bubinga skunk stripes, and has anyone had any problems with the unreinforced necks? Also, does anyone know of any sites that have RG info (other than jemsite, Harmony-Central, etc.)? Thanks |

I think that the bubinga stripe was introduced last year. The reason, they say is for neck reinforcement but, correct me if I'm wrong, isn't it easier to install the truss rod with a stripe on the back of the neck? I know that Fender doesn't say that the rosewood stripe on their necks is for reinforcement. They just route out that area, put in the truss rod, and fill it with rosewood or in this case, bubinga. I believe it's cheaper than going through the fretboard. In your case they can't go under the fretboard because you have a maple fretboard so they go through the back. |

Don't you think the bubinga stripe is for 1-way truss rod (vintage guitar) not 2-way truss rod (modern guitar) ?? |

It very well may be, I have no idea what kind of rod it has in it... |

First off, 550s have a two piece neck. The fretboard is glued on and the truss rod routed and inserted below, exactly like the rosewood on a 560 or 570. The stripe was introduced to help reinforce the Wizard neck which, being so thin, is prone to cracks. Fenders with maple necks have one piece necks, therefore the routing is necessary to install the truss rod. |

Actually, if you remove an newer RG neck, you will find that the bubinga stripe goes all the way through to the bottom of the fret board. |

I,ve been reading some of the remarks on the rg 550. I own a desert yellow rg 550. Which is made in 1987. I,ve had it for years. And have never had any problems with the neck. I KNOW its thin but i leave this guitar tuned in 440 .And i take care of it like it was my child. This guitar is so close to being a jem . As i also play a bfp77. Both have maple fret boards. This rg550 is not a re-issue.But the first year made. |
