Author Message   shocking pink Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    mid eighties RGs didnt have RG written on the headstock, and the headstock color matched the body color recent RGs have a black headstock mid eighties RGs were made in japan i believe recent Rgs are made in Korea, or Mexico man, what happened! Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica (oh yeah!! these cool-looking-rich-and-famous-rock-stars where once a really good band), Helloween... and people like that. It was a really good period of time for rock music until Bon Jovi & AOR buried the heavy metal. But I think that now it's a diferent period of time. Yeah, maybe new heavy metal (Blind Guardian, Stratovarius, Rhapsody...) is not what it was. And maybe guitars are not what they were. But I think we have good heavy metal and good guitars at this moment. And, personally, I prefer actual ones.   Kyle Kruszewski Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    Actually, most of the real RG models (400 series and up) are still manufactured in Japan. Of course this is just my personal opinion, but I think the RG style guitars have been much better since the late '80s. Not only in feel, but especially in materials; Ibanez is finally making some non-basswood RGs. Gotta love it. ;)   CHUMMER Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    my friend has an rg 550 from about 9 yrs ago and its still in better than mint cond . i'm glad to see the all access neck is now avail on the 550 i switched to the 540 sltd in 94. and i seriously miss the 80's but luckily a few bands are making a comeback and hopefuly they will put the final nail in the coffin of the alternative craze somebody needs to....... i'm looking for guitarists to consult with on many ideas, techniques,excercises etc...   Lou Glorfeld Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    RG guitars with Wizard II necks and Lo TRS II tremolos are made in Korea. RG guitars with Wizard necks and Edge or Lo-Pro Edge tremolos are made in Japan. The guitars made in Japan have noticably higher quality workmanship and components; however, the Korean made guitars may actually set up better and play better after proper set up. Unlike the Koreans, the Japanese don't seem to know what correct locking nut height is or what level frets mean (be ready to get out the files). My Jem 555 (korean made) plays circles around my RG 570 (made in Japan), even though the RG 570 is obviously a higher quality guitar.   Daniel Waldrop Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    i just bought a black ibanez that doesn't have RG on the head stock and it was made in japan. If you look under RG guitars, for example, you will find pictures and specifications of current RG models. The new RG guitars do not tell you what model you have purchased, but simply say RG Series on the headstock. I have to say that my newest one (the 520) has a much better feel to the neck with the bubinga strip in it than the others do. I've been playing and collecting Ibanez guitars (particularly RGs) for about nine years and without a doubt, these USA Customs are the finest instruments I've ever played (though I am developing a hard-on for a JPM model)! My two USA Customs are from '96 which I believe is the last year they made them. I'm presently looking for more (preferably different finishes). I'd like to correspond with anyone who owns or may be interested in selling one. I have an extensive collection of Japanese RGs and also a few 540s, and JEMs. Basically anything with a Wizard type neck...So if you're interested in selling. trading or just "chatting" about these fine instruments, drop me a note!...   Aristoteles Abreu Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    I had an experience with an RG570 that I thought could be of any interest to you , RG lovers. I always wanted to have a good jazz box but ended up buying this RG because it was a real bargain at the time. It was in excellent condition and had DiMarzios instead of the original PU’s. I bought it cheap but in fact I never liked its sounds. They were thin and inadequate to my music style. But still the guitar had that wonderful Wizzard neck... After several years I finally decided to fix it to my taste or trade it. So, I went to DiMarzio’s site and found that my PU’s were a PAF in the neck, an HS2 in the middle and a PAF Pro in the bridge. Well, at least the PU’s were adequate to me. Maybe the wiring was wrong. So I disconected everything, bought a brand new 5pos Megaswitch and new pots from Stewart-McDonald’s (a nice shop in the net) and started to check the several wiring options offered with the switch. To my surprise I came out with one of the most versatile and best sounding guitars around. Positions 1,2 and 3 produced sounds very suitable for jazz and blues and pos 4 and 5 are Fender like but sweeter and without hum. Going further I adjusted the LO PRO Edge tremolo according to Ibanez and locked it with wood and copper shims (yeah, I know this is a sin, but...) and now I have an excellent “hard tail” bridge with micro-intonation, which is a plus. I know that there are many other PU’s in the market that could sound even better but I’ve compared several guitars with mine and concluded that it stands very well against other famous brands. I finally have a decent jazz sound in a very playable, low action guitar (thanks to the Wizzard neck...), the only problem being it’s color (an awfull red, almost pink). If any of you have any comment or suggestion or even want to know details of the wiring, please feel free to address me. BTW, my guitar in Japan made, with the headstock color matching the body and LO-PRO Edge tremolo. Is it possible to know the date of manufacturing? Thanks a lot. I also have an RG550 in iron pewter. about 6 months ago I dropped on stage and took a great big chunk out of the side.To my horror under the paint work i found what we in Australia call bog (Automotive body filler).This made me very upset and decided to investigate my RG760 for the same lovely resonant plastic filler but alas there was none.I decide to strip the body back to see what there was under it but I had to go throught three layers of different paintwork (filler, paint then filler again). So I decided to get a new body made up for it out of Jarrah as an experiment. This guitar now sounds great and chunky it also has nearly the same amount of resonance and sustain as a well made les paul considering it is a floating bridge.... IN CONCLUSION IF YOU WANT TO BUY A LATE MODEL RG MAKE SURE SURE IT HAS A TRANSLUCENT PAINT JOB THAT WAY THEY CANT HIDE ANYTHING UNDER THE PAINT.....OTHERWISE I HAVE 13 IBANEZ GUITARS AND I AM QUITE HAPPY WITH THEM ALL...   ahmad d Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    hi to all, i currently own 4 ibanezs, need help with my RG... :-( its neck's warped at the upper frets, particularly from the 17th onwards. have to say that there's no QUALIFIED repairman here in singapore (sic). i tried to rectify this by turning the truss rod, but it managed to sraighten the lower/mid fret area only- there's still some buzzing at the upper frets. i'm gonna be terribly upset if i have to trash this baby, 'cause it's my first ibanez, sob,sob :-/ somebody please help... thank u 4 yer time. kudos. ahmad d. singapore 380100. **ps: i fixed duncans into my S540- it RULES!!   spiro Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    Ahmad, You can easily go to your Ibanez dealer and buy a new neck for your RG . Our dealer here has rows and rows of necks. The problem with the wizard necks is that they are so thin that you cannot heat treat them straight. And if you succeed, it is only temporary. I have an RG 560 from '88. I need a new neck, but none of the new necks are the same (including the new Japanese "Wizard" neck, which is much wider). Does anybody have the specs. on the old RG 560/550 neck? I know Ibanez still makes a 550, but they use the "Wizard" neck of late... which I don't like. It has very thin neck, three pickups, one single neck pickup, one single in the middle, and one double coiled bridge pickup. It has Floyd-RoseII tremolo. Guitar has no serial number, or anything else apart from "Ibanez"logo printed anywhere in it. Machine heads are "made in W.Germany" , and trem "made in W.Germany by Schaller". Is this a real Ibanez guitar,or could it be some sort of (un)authorized copy?   jester Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    Hmm. Sounds like the tuners are Schaller, too. I wasn't aware Ibanez ever used Schaller hardware. I wonder if it might just be an Ibanez neck on a different body?   Steve Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    My son is looking at an Ibanez guitar in the UK. I cannot find any information to help us know if the asking price is fair. It has RG series on the head stock, it has a mirror scratch plate (don't know the word for it). The pick-ups are not marked (I think 2 twins and a single). The body and head is sparkling metallic silver. It has dots on the fretboard (rather than sharkteeth). A really nice Floyd rose trem. It is a used guitar in great condition. It doesn't sound as nice as a Jem but the F.Rose action is wonderful. I have searched on the web for hours - can anyone help?   John Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    Sounds like an RG550 with custom pickups (since the stock ones have a label on them)... Sounds like a great guitar. It's worth probably around $300-$500, depending on what pickups are mounted... Paid $385 for it. Did I pay too much. I looked up the serial # and the model year appears to be a 1990. What name does the neck have? What colors did it come in? Mine is nuclear yellow with a black pickguard. Awesome! It has an edge trem but is missing the arm. Where can I get one (an arm)? Hardware is black. Fretboard is maple. Did they make any 550's with rosewood? Great condition. Plays and sounds like a mutha. Cool axe. How many different RG's have there been over the years? My dad and many others said Ibanez's were pieces of trash. I paid about 15 bucks canadian so that would be probably about 10 bucks US. I think the RG550's came in rosewood too. I have 6 of them. I love my Ibanez guitars, they're well built and I'm not all worried if I get a srcatch or ding in them. The color is purple, and the headstock color is the same w/ the body color. The Bridge pickup is replace w/ DiMarzio Super Distortion. For an old stuff, the condition is still good, there is no scratch in body, but the fretboard isn't shiny anymore. I wonder, is anyone has the real pic from the catalog of this guitar? It feels great if u have the catalog real pic and the guitar itself, and i will use it in my web, or is anyone know how to contact ibanez people, so I can ask them for the right pic. I just wanna know the exactly model number of my Ibanez, it´s age and what can I do to find a better clean sound (middle and fretboard pickups) and a better distortion sound (bridge pickup). The guitar is white, serial number : F240382, pickups: V1, S1 and V2. I use Marshall valvestate at home and a JCM 900 whith the band. I also use Dunlop´s Cry Baby, an old BOSS chorus and the amplifier´s drive.Could you possible advise me the best alternative in pickups for my guitar? I´m sure that I can find a better sound. I love my Ibanez, I bought it in 1997 (used), it´s nearly new.Please I woukl like to recieve some comments.- Regards *Carlos cmonzon@favra.com.ar   wes caley Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    This is a real crazy question here:I have an Ibanez RG550(probably a '90,as there is no all-acces neck joint)and it is tuned to B,with the guages 11-16-24-32-42-52,and has terrible buzz on the low E string.I have tried adjusting the truss rod to no avail,raising action on bass side,etc.Nothing works and my neck is not warped! Do I need a heavier gauge E-string to compensate(maybe a 54-58)? It is a white RG model with black pickguard and 3 ibz-usa pups (dimarzio??). It has a floyd license bridge, 24 fret neck with shark tooth inlays and xtra jumbo frets. The neck is bound and is rosewood. The headstock doesn't have any RG model on it, or on the back. The Neckplate has the PA address as well as the sn 8912xx. I got if really cheap with the original Ibanez HSC. That's about it... can someone give me some information? I think I own one of the most strange Ibanez ever made; there's a lot of people here who owns similar guitars (I've read it a couple of times, people talking about Schaller hardware mounted on an Ibanez RG with no serial number), but nobody seems to know anything about this axes. The pickups just say IBZ USA F4 C3 and F2. I've heard something about these being dimarzio pickups but im not sure. does anybody know what these are? also i've got a major problem my single coil pickup no longer works. A number of Blazers and Roadstars and Artists.... I presently have a JEM77FP and JS1 which keep me happy but I found and currently tracking down two guitars in town that are sitting in wardrobes... a mint white RG750 and a mint blue S540LTD :-) I'll let you know if I can lay the hands on them... Yes the Jap model scream and are the best! Thanks, BigM   Jer (Jer) Posted on Thursday, February 21, 2002 - 7:06 pm:    Hey Carlos I'm a new ibanez owner,I've just had a RG 550 reissue.It's the nicest guitar I own except may be for my tele ,but thats a in a differant ball park.Reguarding your query about new pickups,I was in two minds about changing my bridge pickup but after I managed to pick up a screaming demon cheap I could'nt resist changing it .It is a great pickup although it has been suggested that it seems a bit under powered on a RG. Well I can hear what could be taken for the lack of power, but this is made up for in supreme clarity and a great bottom end this is a fine pickup for lead duties I feel.I probably would not have picked this pickup had it not been such a good deal, but the more I play it the more I love it.Now I'm thinking of a PAF for the neck but hey we will see, us guitarists are always after the "tone" part of the fun I think all the best Jer   Dave_The_Dude (Dave_The_Dude) Posted on Thursday, November 20, 2003 - 7:26 am:    I asked this here before, but seeing as this is a RG thread, I thought I'd try again. I had an Ibanez stolen, and I don't have any of the information with it. Steve, Mr. Roadstar, said he thought it was a mid '80's RoadStar RG600. I looked at pictures of his white w/ purple burst (the color of the one stolen), but it's not the one. It was a hardtail. It was white with a purple burst, but MUCH more white and MUCH less purple than the one he just sold. The headstock was also white, with Ibanez, but no model identification. The horns were much more rounded (than the RG600). It had two active HB's. I bought it in the mid '80's as a used guitar. It was a sweet sounding guitar, and I'd like to replace it. Any ideas? The guitar has a sparkle or metallic white finnish with golden hardware v7, s1 and v8 humbuckers. I`d be thankful if anyone could tell me exactly how many was made..
