Well I did it again, even after I said I wouldn't. I was in a pawnshop this last weekend, and found a '91 RG someone had lost for I'm sure was a small amount of cash. I told myself and the Mrs. I wouldn't buy anymore guitars for awhile, but this one has to be an exception. Butterscotch is color, rosewood fretboard, EMG active PU's, and not a scratch on it. The front has a very thin laminate top, with the excellent grain and also what looks like a "photo flame" job. Anyway, the price was more than fair at $295 with the original Ibanez case, trem bar, and even an extra set of Ernie Ball Super Slinky's. (Which I've been using since the age of 15!) The question I have is there must be someone out there who can tell me if the PU's are stock of not? Did Ibanez make any RG's with EMG's? Any info on this would be helpful. I had to put it on lay-a-way until this weekend because the salesman said he'd only had it for 1 day. Maybe it was just being in the right place at the right time. More as the story continues.... |

I just got this axe home today. It looks like it is not a laminate top at all! From what I can tell, it seems as if they colored the guitar except for the face, which is of course two piece. It does have a beautiful grain and also a very nice flame to it. This has got me completely stumped! PLEASE, is there anyone who can help me identify this guitar? Tomorrow I will put a string tree on her, (it's missing, but the screw holes are there) and set the PU height. I did plug it in this evening, and man are those PU's loud! HELP! |

Bobby: It sounds like you got a nice deal. Sorry that no one has been able to supply info on the exact model for you. I bet the members of the Jemsite would know. Have you tried asking over there? If you get an answer let us know. |

'91 RG with natural top and EMGs? Sounds like a USA Custom, but if it is, it should read "USA Custom" on the headstock. Does it have an AANJ (all access neck joint)? ie; no steel neck plate? If so, it must be a USA Custom body - but if the neck doesn't read "USA Custom", then someone has replaced it... If it's a replacement neck, it would have to be later than 1991 unless it was modified, since ONLY USA Customs had the AANJ back in 1991... John's right, Jemsite is the place to go for answers (I'm a regular there :-) |

Thanks guys for all your input. I have found out from my local axe builder that it is an early prestige model, more than likely with a photo flame. But the important part, is that he believes he installed the EMG's about a year ago on my very guitar. The neck joint does have a plate, just like my '87 and '89 RG's do. I have to say the Lo Pro trem it has (which is basically the "edge" only flatter) is a great trem system, but somewhat different than my other 2 edge's. When all is said and done, this guitar ROCKS! I cant' believe I didn't go active years ago.... Keep up all the Ibanez energy, Bobby |

Your local guy is out to lunch on this one. ALL Prestige guitars have the AANJ. All USA Custom guitars have the AANJ except for some graphics, and I'm not sure about the rare and mysterious USA Master Series bolt-ons (very few came out of the Cali. shop tasked with building them, and the Lo Pro Edge post-dates them anyway). There were the Japanese made RG770FMs from 1990-1991. They were Japanese RGs with Flame Maple tops in two finishes, but they had shark's tooth inlays on the fretboard... What's the serial number? Is it in the neck plate? |
