ICX & DCX - Insult or Conteporary Cla...

Author Message   Murray Geddes (Skybone) Posted on Friday, April 06, 2001 - 2:29 pm:    I recently saw an advert in a guitar mag for an ICX120 Iceman and a DCX120 Destroyer. Being a bit of a sucker for these 2 particular types of guitar I rang the shop and asked them about the guitars. Apart from the assistant on the other end of the phone being a tad ignorant about these Ibanez models, I left well alone, until a number of both models turned up in my local guitar shop. The crux of the matter is that these two new models, though taking design and styling cues from their name sakes are small body versions of them. Anyone else seen these guitars? Anyone else think that they arent "proper" and therefore shouldnt bear these great names? Anyone else care?   Steve (Gitfiddle1) Posted on Friday, April 06, 2001 - 9:40 pm:    Murray, It's a bit uncomfortable to see those guitars on the wall. While they seem to be well built and play all right, they just look WRONG! The ICX120 looks like somebody washed their Iceman in hot water. The DCX120 has had so much whacked off the tail that the porportions are horrible. I wonder if this was to make it fit a standard case? The inexpensive high production models are what pay the bills for the big manufacturers. Therefore, economy versions of classic designs are a necessary evil. I hesitate to judge "right" or "wrong" where the name usage is concerned but, I sure as hell don't have to like it. Steve   Timo Posted on Saturday, April 07, 2001 - 1:49 pm:    I tend to agree with Steve. These two models, ICX-120 and DTX-120 were introduced last year at the NAMM show. They are clearly low budget versions of the Iceman and Destroyer and make use of generic "tune-o-matic" bridges and stop tail pieces instead of the classic Ibanez "Gibratar II" bridge and "Quick Change II" tail pieces used on standard or higher price range guitars. The ICX body did not suffer nearly as much as the tragic, "premature?" DTX. The DTX just looks so bad with the propotions and angles messed with like that. Being a big time Destroyer II fan and collector I have to say that a big frown came across my face the first time I saw one of these. Regardless of how it sounds the proportions just do not work. Some catalogs started carrying these around summer last year at $349.00 with the price dropping to $249.00 almost immediately. You can find them on Ebay once in a while where they rarely break the $200.00 level. Save your money and get a good, used, full sized "real thing" of either Iceman or Destroyer II.   Murray Geddes (Skybone) Posted on Sunday, April 08, 2001 - 1:05 pm:    I wondered what people thought of these guitars. "Neccessary evil" made me smile. Timo's comment about them looking "premature" is the best description I've heard, and I too have noticed the drop in price, though I have only seen them in a couple of places, thankfully they're still a bit rare in Europe. I think the DTX looked wrong too, but not as wrong as the ICX, being an Iceman fan. Not to worry, I have no intention of buying one, I'll stick with my 94 reissue Iceman, but I am tempted by a proper Destroyer (just dont tell my other half!).   Ice (Mark_Hartman) Posted on Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 5:57 am:    Oh man! You guys got it right on the money - LOL! "Washed the Iceman in hot water"...that's terrific! I wouldn't even offend my mother-in-law with one of those insipid abominations. She may lack the visual skills needed to recognize that those guitars are offensive, but she can wheeze the "Star Spangled Banner" out her nose. Oh yeah...that reminds me it's her birthday next month. Maybe a new big gag - oops, I mean "gig bag"... I do appreciate giving the student/beginner guitarist a non-strat/les paul shaped option. Second, it's refreshing to see respectful opinions. I honestly expected nothing but bashing! I have to give Ibanez points for having the rocks to release those models. They are obviously aimed at the entry level buyer. I wonder how long they'll last? Check my post under "What do you think of the Artist reissues?" on a similar note. Steve   Skybone Posted on Friday, April 13, 2001 - 6:24 pm:    What can I say.....Flattery'll get you everywhere! *L* I just thought it'd be interesting to see if any of the other Iceman & Destroyer fans had an opinion on these guitars. Like everyone's saying, they're great for the up and coming guitarists who want something different, and lets face it, these models certainly are different (they do actually have quite nice necks IMO).
