New ibanez s series different?

Author Message   diecast Posted on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 - 4:43 pm:    what are everybody's thoughts on the newer ibanez s-series? they have the new s-shaped inlays and they seemed to be more thrown together in the construction process. has ibanez scaled down the production costs? they seem heavier weight-wise than the older models and the craftsmanship has gone downhill. let me know what you all think. i need somebody to convince me that they are just as good as they have always been.   Tim (Dbrawl) Posted on Wednesday, October 24, 2001 - 2:31 pm:    I own two USA made 1989 540S guitars, and I just recently bought a 2001 S370. I am very happy with it. The pickups aren't as good and the action is a little higher (I haven't tweaked it yet) but I enjoy playing it. It doesn't seem to weigh much more if any, and the neck feels just about the same. If heard that the new neck is 2mm thicker but I couldn't tell. Granted my two 540s are better guitars but I am very happy with the new one, too.   Steve (Gitfiddle1) Posted on Wednesday, October 24, 2001 - 4:00 pm:    The current "S" line-up still has some familiar models. The new S520 is way cool! It's got a walnut stained, flat finish and V1/V2 pickups. I WANT ONE !! The S370's are a mid priced model. Somewhere between the S470 and the SA/GSA stuff. Glad to hear you like yours, Tim. The bodies have gained thickness on some models. I don't know if this is a Korea vs Japan thing or just model to model differences. My brother's SF420 (Korean) is a little thicker than my SF470 (Japanese). The SA/GSA offerings have a flat back with the tapered top. I prefer the paper-thin original body shape. Mostly because that's what my SF470 has. Any "S" is cool in my book... Cheers Steve   PS10 (Spiro) Posted on Thursday, October 25, 2001 - 3:57 am:    The 540S was Not made in the US at all.. the pickups are made in the US and yes they did use a neck plate with the philadelphia address on it... The guitar was completely manufactured in Japan and pickups and neck were "assembled" in the US.. This was during the era of the USRG's and American Masters. 1989-1996 Now to get back to the top question.. I agree... the newer S's are all Korean made. why did they stop the 540 series? I thought the S2020X, S1520, and S520 were still Japanese built. Bummer... S1520 is available as well (special order) for that matter any product that appears in the USA catalouge is available "DOWNUNDER" if we don't have it we will get it to be honest there's only a few guitars not carried as a stock line. *Please note* no Spiro's were hurt during this act of disipline. It's changed my whole perspective on what a really good guitar is all about. Worth every penny (got mine at a steal for under US$1000 + plus case). If your gonna jump... jump big. Kirk
