I was given an Ibanez Artist with an ID number 1814888 made in Japan. I believe it's an AR300 and I think it dates from September 1981, if I understood the ID system correctly, I think the first "1" in the ID is really an "I", indicating September.

Can anyone verify this or otherwise correct me? I would also like to know the actual worth of this beautiful instrument with all original parts.

Thanks!

David, probably is september 81, you are right. The AR300 had

- Super 80 Tri-sound pickups (two switches for the tri-sound)
- Abalone & pearloid block position markers
- Gold hardware

Sound like your Artist? See the thread in "Vintage & Custom electrics" where the entire Artist line is given with pics. Do you have a picture of your Artist? Enjoy your gift, they are great guitars IMHO. I have a AR200 from 1979 and it rocks!

David:

Here's a white '82 AR300 on ebay. The pictures are good, so you should be able to verify that it looks like your's. And you can watch it's eventual selling price to get an idea of it's worth.

Well, current prices are always a little tricky. Depending on many factors, besides general condition of the instrument.
But I think we all can agree on that the prices on Artists have gone up over the past year.
The 2617 "Ash Artist" for example continues to reach the 1000$ mark on many occasions.
I also think that prices vary a little depending on the country the item is sold in.

Its all about public demand you know...

The 2617 series is a good example of supply and demand. They are fairly commonplace over here in the UK. A realistic sale price is around £350 to £450 ($500 to $700) subject to condition and originality. Some sellers are asking more but I've noticed their ads reappearing in the classifieds. Most shops are way over he mark on price. Additionally, I've come across some UK sellers confusing their 2617NT with the 2681NT advertising the guitar as a “Bob Weir” model.
