Hello all. I've got a problem. What do I do with this guitar? It's an X series guitar (explorer-type body) from Ibanez. Got it at a pawn shop for $200. From what I understand there is a bit of history behind this guitar, but I'm not quite sure. It's in decent condition. Serial # B832213, cherry red finish, maple neck. Thats about all I know. I have seen Adrian Smith from Iron Maiden use a similar make. Does anyone know if there's any history to this guitar (I've never seen it anywhere else) and is there any value to this guitar? Please respond!

Michael:

there's some pictures in Michael Wright's Guitar Stories, Vol.1 of the X-series Destroyer and the Destroyer II. I'd suspect your's is an early '83.
The book doesn't say much about it at all, tho.

Tell us more about your guitar, please.

Is it bolt neck or glued? Dots or block markers? Does it say X series or Destroyer on the headstock? Opaque cherry red, I assume?

John:

OK here it goes, It is a bolt neck, with dots, and it says X Series on the headstock (underneath it says "the ultimate expression of craftsmanship) and yes opaque cherry red

Well, it doesn't sound like your axe is one with a "story" behind it, nor is it a high-end model that is considered very collectable.

I believe, there are 2 Destroyers on ebay, now. If you're curious about their relative value, watch what they go for.

Your original question was: "What do I do with this guitar?" It's customary for guitar players to play guitars. Try it, you'll like it. J

Adrian Smith AND Dave Murray of Iron Maiden made use of Destroyersduring the Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind tours. Phil Collen of Def Leppard used one during the Pyromania era. It wadBADASS! Black with 3 hubuckers! It was my dream guitar at that time. Your Destroyer therefore has high value in my book!

I believe there were two price levels running simutaniously with the Destroyer around 83-83. Both were sold under the "X"series omniker. Entry level models had bolt on necks, Fender-style whammy bridges and I think opaque(solid)finishes on unbound bodies.
The higher end models had flame maple laminate tops, glued in(set)necks, binding on the body and sometimes neck and either separate Gibraltar bridge & tailpiece combo or 1-piece stop-tail type bridges. I now own 2 of the higher end models from 82 & 84. One has the separate bridge/tail and the other has the 1 piece combo tail.
I probably overpaid for the one I bought today but I had to have it since Destroyers are generally not too common and I have been a fan since Iron Madien first played them.
Richard, you should call Univibe in Berkeley CA. 510-420-0302. They have your black,PhilCollen,3pu,vibrato Destroyer. Not great shape but it's the real thing.

Hi there I think I have the same guitar, I checked out Ebay today, but my guitar isnt posted there... Its a '83 X series, cherry red top, flying V shaped, made in Japan and with very good sound - I got it from a guy who used it to play blues (by the way his name is Mr. Hendrix, but its just a coincidence)... A price estimation and a closer identification would be very useful, Ill try to get some pic of it... Thanks...

These days its worth whatever the buyer is willing to pay. It's not rare & is the lower end model. I would say $150-225...
