Neck Pocket Markings For Model ID ??

Author Message   Mr_Roadstar (Mr_Roadstar) Posted on Thursday, November 06, 2003 - 11:45 am:    Hey Ya'll, My latest acquisition, an '86 RG440DW, finally got disassambled for repairs and detailing. As usual, while taking it apart, I looked closely for signs of damage or previous tampering and modifying. Although some idiot had destroyed the knife edges in an amateur attempt to block the trem, the guitar appeared to be as originally produced. Judging from finish marks and the condition of the neck and pickguard screws, I'm confident it had never been apart after it left the factory. Here's where it gets interesting. Upon removal of the neck, I found the neck was marked "410", and body "450". Remember, I'm working on an RG440. This confirmed something that I had suspected for quite a while. Neck pocket numbers cannot be relied on to identify a specific model number. In this case, it appears that the ink stampings indicate the original intended use of the neck and body. But by the time they actually came together in production, they were assembled as a 440. For reference: ALL '86, 400 series Roadstars used the same neck. The 430, 440, and 450, all used the same body. Only the pickguard assembly varied. Anybody else have info to share on this subject? Cheers Steve
