Questions about RBM-1

Author Message   Marcel (Marcel) Posted on Monday, January 05, 2004 - 11:23 am:    Hi, this is my first post on this board so hi to you all and thanks to John Shanley for providing me an account! I have some questions about my RBM-1 (ser.no. F134726 - made in Japan), black with black hardware. First off all I was wondering if anyone here can make something out of the ser.no. what year it was made etc. Second, I bought this guitar second hand from someone and I'm not sure if he changed, or had it change the electrics/pups. I can't ask him cause he's not around anymore... Reason why I ask is that I noticed that the volumepot is 16k, I always thought that 250k and 500k were standard volume pots in guitars and it seems to me there would be a lot of frequency roll-off with such a low resistance value. So if there are any RBM-1 owners here, can you confirm this was the original resistance value Ibanez used for this guitar? Or did the former owner wack in a pot without matching the resistance? Third I have a Seymour Duncan Trembucker and Cool Rails (neck) lying around and I'm planning on putting them in my RBM, would you advise me to change the pot for a 250k or 500k or not? Thanks, Marcel   Johns (Johns) Posted on Monday, January 05, 2004 - 6:46 pm:    Marcel: I have a '93 catalog with the RBM1 and RBM2 shown. I'd say your serial number indicates it was made in 1991. I don't know anything more about RBM's. However, your controls are not at all like those on either model shown in the '93 catalog. Each of these has 1 master volume, 1 mini toggle (not sure what it's for) and a 5 position switch. Both are shown with Single/Single/Humbucker pickups. Your's looks like it's Hum/Single/Hum. The pickups in '93 were 2 IBZ SB1s (double blades) and an IBZ HB2. Maybe someone else can shed light on the 1991 model specs.   Marcel (Marcel) Posted on Tuesday, January 06, 2004 - 1:17 pm:    Johns: Thanks for your reply. You are right about the controls, I build in a Sustainiac and a Roland GK-1 hex-pickup and that's what the extra controls are for, that's also why you see a hum in the neck but it's not a humbucker, it's the Sustainiac driver along with the original blade pickup. The original toggle was for splitting the humbucker in the bridge but it now functions as the Sustainiac's 'mode'switch. Still clueless about the 16Kohm volumepot, maybe i'll put a 220Kohm resistor in series with it to see what happens tonewise. I'm not asking for RBM owners to open up their electronics cavity (hint, hint ;-) ) but I do would like to know if this is standard or not... Greetings.
