Hey,
I was wondering if anyone knows enough about RG serial numbers to give me an approximate age/model number. The number is 892090. The guitar is Pewter with Sharkfin inlays, and a bound neck. I don't know if its the original neck or not, because this particular model is one I'm looking at trading my Peavey TransTube Supreme head for. I was just wondering what year/model number it was, and if its worth the trade (approx. price on the head is $300). Thanks! |

That serial number would most likely be a 1989 build date. Can't tell you anything else without a more complete description.
As for the trade, which do you need more?

Well, the pickups in it include a IBZusaF1 at the neck, IBZusac2 in the middle, IBZusaF2 at the bridge. It also has a pickguard...although that could have easily been added at some point in time, as I'm not really familiar enough with the older RG's to be able to tell what's original and what's not. Hell, I'm only 18 years old, so I was most likely still strumming on a Harmony when this thing was made.
As for the trade, I still don't know what I'm going to do...I'm getting ready to buy a Mesa/Boogie, so I don't really need the piece of shit Peavey anymore. I already have 11 guitars though...eh, what the hell, you can never have too many guitars...especially Ibanez's. Anyway, thanks for your help. Its starting to help my dillema already... |

What kind of neck joint does it have?. Does it have a square metal plate? Or, is the heel rounded with the 4 screws coutersunk into the body?
The binding and sharkfin inlays make it a high end model. Probably an RG750. I need to look through my catalogs tonight.

The neck joint has the square metal plate on it, not the round, sunken 4-screw job like the newer models have (I have a three or four year old RG570 with the rounded heel like that). Also, I've noticed that the headstock doesn't say "RG Series" like my RG570 does...does this mean anything, or was the model I'm looking made before they started doing this? Just wondering...I'm just trying not to get jipped on this deal. And, as I've said before, thanks for your help! |

The early neck joint confirms the '89 serial number. The majority of pointy headstocks from '88-'89 do not have any series designation.
It's gotta be a 700 series RG. If you like your RG570, you'll love the 700. I'd do the deal.

Thanks again for your help! I still have to do some thinking, since I still lack a couple of hundred bucks for that Mesa (its been my dream amp for years, and my Ibanez collection sounds awesome through one...I've tried them all). But anyway, I'll definately consider it, especially with the info that you guys have given me. Thanks again...and I'm sure you'll be seeing more of me in the future...I'm always finding deals, but I don't know anything about the stuff I'm dealing with (besides the fact that they are Ibanez guitars).
