Greetings,
It would seem that I have the dubious
distinction of being the first to post on this
new effects forum.
I am looking for info on the different models
of the Tubeking pedal. There seems to be at least
3 the first being the prelawsuit Ibanez built
one and the TK999 which I have and the TK999US |

I doubt Mr. Nice is still checking this post after nearly two years, BUT...
The three different models of the Tube King were:
1. TK999 - Japanese Tube King. First issue, it was simply called the Tube King. It also had a noise gate.
2. TK999US - USA Tube King. Made in the USA (not many Ibanez peds had this distinction!), and no noise gate. This is the one we see everywhere.
3. TC999 Tube King Compressor - Took me awhile to find this one; it appears to only exist overseas in the Scandinavian countries and Holland.

Ibanez Tube King pedals, at least the TK999, probably the TC999, and the casing, if not also parts of the TK999US were most likely manufactured by Maxon of Japan.
Maxon was the manufacturer for most of the earlier Ibanez pedals, including the Tube Screamers (TS808, TS9, TS9 RI, TS9DX, TS5). Maxon made the stomp boxes up through the Soundtank series, but not the new Tone-Lok series.
Maxon's ROD Series of pedals have the same casing and knobs as the TK999, but are only available in Japan. I think it's is reasonable to assume that the Maxon ROD880 is the Maxon version of the TK999, and the Maxon RCP660 a version of the TC999.

The TK999, which I am lucky enough to own, is one of my favorite overdrive pedals of all times. It has a 12AX7, 4 JRC4558 OpAmp chips (same as in TS808), Noise Reduction, and silver/gold knobs with black painted tops (that fall off frequently).
The later, TK999US, was released after the supposed lawsuit by Real Tube. For my part, this lawsuit is mostly rumor as I've not seen or heard any official comment about it. The US models in my opinion are not on par with the original. Cosmetically, they have a glossier finish (the orginals are matte), and black rubber Fender Amp-style knobs (that do not fall of as easily). They have a 12AX7, no noise reduction, and I am not sure about the opamps.
I do not know anything about a 3rd generation Tube King, but if it exists, it may be some variation on the TK999US. |
