Just bot the reissue tube screamer and AB'd it against a Boss BD-2 w/ tone @ 0 could'nt justify the $100 difference! TS did sound better but not $100 better! Play blues 100%
Amp- H&K edition tube
Guitars- Memphis tele w/ holly grails
Strat w/ fralins
Did I go partially deaf?

I tried out the new TS-808 reissue last week. I currently use an Ibanez Super Tube (not the most desirable Tube Screamer edition). I assumed I'd hear a big difference - enough to make me want to retire my ST-9 - but I didn't. Guess they're both just really good sounding pedals. I just can't say that the reissue TS-808 is something super special or unique, just real good.

In my personal opinion the ST-9 or STL supertube are far better sounding than any tubescreamer and far more desirable. I'll be most happy to help you get rid of your ST for a fair price ;-) Ofcourse a ts-808 reissue (or the original) is not something very special. All differences in sound are very small when comparing the various ts-es

From my experiences, and experiences of players I've spoken with:

As a boost, there is not much difference, other than the TS808 having a slightly more harmonic output.

As a primary overdrive, the TS808 seems to run a little hotter gain, but the TS9 is slightly warmer.

These are of course subjective observations, and everyone will hear a slightly greater or smaller difference depending on various factors.

I have opened up the TS808, and it is a true replica. It even has the JRC4558D OpAmp. How they got this chip remanufactured I don't know. I've read that JRC was purchased by NJR, and that NJR would only reopen the manufacturing process for the original 4558D's for a 5 million chip minimum. Maybe Ibanez worked out a deal, or had some NOS, who knows. The great thing is that the TS808 RI is an exact replica, and not just a TS9 RI in an 808 housing.

Is the difference between the TS808 RI and the TS9 RI worth $70? That's probably something each of us needs answer on our own. But there are obviously some who think so, because the original TS808's have been going for $350+ on ebay for the past few years. Obviously Ibanez wanted to offer these players an exact sounding alternative at half the price.

I definitely think the TS808 RI is worth the $200 smaller pricetag than that of a vintage TS808.
