It's been a long time since I've seen one...and I'm always looking since I got mine last year. Seems pretty $high with only a bin.

I do like the cherry but I'd be going for an older one...And, I still like the '95 Samick AS120 I got...a lot. There just don't seem to be a many of these around.

Is $675 a good price for an AS120?

That's 2/3 of the new price ($999.99) in 2001, so it's reasonable.

Oops, I'm wrong. The AF120 was $999.99 and the AS120 was $899.99 so its about $67.- too high.
Let's say $600.- is reasonable.

Ginger,

Is it that they just didn't make a lot of these? I'd get another if a sunburst came along...uh, if they even had sunburst. I'd get a cherry, too. Still looking for an older one.

Tristan,

AS180 or AS120? I was talking about the 120.

I understand you were talking about the AS120 but it's korean made.
I just implied that it's far too expensive and for that price you can probably get a MIJ AS180.

We are talking about two guitars from the 1997 catalogue, so not Vintage (yet), just 10 year old second hand guitars. The value of a second hand guitar lies between 1/2 (fair condition) and 2/3 if in (near) mint condition.
The AS120 was made in Korea and the ones made in the Cort Factory had good wax potted Super 58 pups. It was a luxurious model, with gold hardware and beautiful MOP/abalone/MOP fretboard inlays, while the AS180 is a DOT.
There is no reason I can think of that would make the Cort made AS120 less valuable than the usual 50-66.7% of the list price.
There IS such a reason for the AS120 from 1994 and the first 4 months of 1995: the non wax-potted Super 50 pups that gave microphonic feedback. You may subtract the price of a pair of good Super 58's, and when you got it, try to save this money by wax potting the Super 50's (like Hazy succesfully did).

Tristan, your AS180 was worth 50-66.7% of 1399.99
depending on the condition of the guitar. So near mint: $866.67

And for a mint AS120 with GOOD pickups $600.-
When the condition is "FAIR" it's only $450.- of course, but the 50% rule also goes for a "FAIR" AS180. To me there is no magic in the Made in Japan sticker. The differences in quality and production cost were already expressed in the 1997 list price, and a percentage is a percentage, only exception: real vintage guitars. In order to become a vintage guitar the AS180 will have to age another 10-15 years.

All nice and good, I was only trying to say that while you consider an AS120 for 675$, an AS180 in a very good condition was sold for about 550$.

I corrected the $675.- to $600.- And if there is a good case + accessories like a good strap, $675.- wouldn't be unreasonable.
The AS180 was way too cheap. You should have bought it. You would have sold it better, that's for sure.

I would never sell an AS without setting a reserve. The seller of the AS120 in your link is taking a risk by not setting a reserve. You shouldn't do that right after Christmas, Carneval, Summer Holydays, any event that costs a lot of money. Those are bad periods to sell. Shops are giving ridiculous discounts in these periods too, just to survive and pay the rent and personnel.

I'm not sure I should've sold mine better, I got 949 euros for it, it's the highest score I've seen on ebay for an AS180..

That's not what I'm saying.
You should have bought the cheap one for $550 + 1 and then sell it again, because you are a better seller: better pics, better info, setting a reserve etc.
2/3 would have been achievable, perhaps even 70-75%. The €949.- you got was pretty high. That indicates an emotional competitive buy. That's not the rational value of the guitar (about $700-875 without the case, which wasn't cheap, second hand value between €75-90).
When you're going to offer a second one, one competitor (the one who bought yours for €949.- is probably NOT going to bid again, because his need was already satisfied). Less competition will result in a lower price, especially if you pick a bad selling period. And don't offer the same type of guitars within a short period of time. People will think the guitar is common.

I just browsed all Ibanez guitars on ebay and found 5 or 6 AS120 up for sale. Are they that difficult to find or is this an unusual time on ebay with 5 or 6?

Hmm, I found 4 and all red.
One is missing a pickguard, a case and an adequate description: this is not a DOT!

The 3 others come with a case. One of them is an SKB. One claims to be OHSC and the 3rd one doesn't claim to but could also be an OHSC.
Personally, I'm not so fond of SKB, after I've tried some in a music store. I don't like their VERY tight fit on several models. Sometimes they're really too small. I don't kno about this one. If you can get an Original Hard Shell Case, you should grab it. They were expensive, but good.

Here's what I found:

Ebay Item #190093044698

Ebay Item #120096442325

Ebay Item #110103428597

I think 4 at once in the same colour is quite unusual. And another good thing: they all have the original gold covered Super 58's, NO DUNCANS!
But personally I prefer sunburst.

I guess "DOT", "335", and other expressions alike come from sellers' try to connect the items to more expensive guitars. Perhaps they don't know that (today's) Epi DOT is cheaper.

Mine is a 1997 and not on the web and certainly not WITHOUT A RESERVE. Man, that's stupid!

I could not even find this guitar by typing "Ibanez 120" or "Ibanez Artstar", so the seller is lucky you put the link on ICW with only 3.5 days to go.

But to answer your question:
They are really good guitars. The reviews on Harmony Central are very good, and there are not just a few. It has a very high average score(9.6) on sound from 25 users or so. Not from one individual owner.

I'm keeping mine.

Man, five AS120s at one time. When I started this thread, I had found one cherry and hadn't seen a SB in a long time. Still, no old headstock 120s out there.

Played my Samick 120 last night at a Houston jam...it absolutely kicks arse! I'm still waiting for those of you out there who want to dispose of the Super 50 pups...LOL.
