Hi guys, I chanced upon someone locally with a 1979 Gibson ES335 but he wants too much money for it (at least, more than I've offered for it - around $2000 - and he won't say what he is really looking to get for it...). So, I've decided to acquire a good Ibanez guitar of a similar vintage and style, at a more affordable price. Mainly for recording purposes. Looking for something with great action, great sound. Used to own an Ibanez Artist many years ago, my first electric (it was black and had stars for fret markers), but my brother mistakenly thought I had given it to him and sold it... I presently own a very nice Ibanez FG100 archtop which I use for jazzy standards. Looking for something which will play blues, fusion, rock n roll, and the 335 has to be one of the most versatile guitars on the planet. I'm lost in all the Ibanez models, and the Scofield model is also appealing to me. Any advice on which model to get, for my use? I'm looking to spend around $800-1000, and want something nice. Thanks! |

335's are my favorite guitars...that being said I bought and sold two this year. Both were dissapointing. I now have a Korean AS80. The tone to my ears is just as good and the fit and finish is way better than the recent 335's I've played. No bashing here as I love them. You just have to find a good one and be prepared to pay for it. In your price range I would think you could step up from the AS80 I have to one of the Japanese thinlines. |

INdeed, I'd like to get a Japanese-made (older, vintage?) Ibanez or similar model. I just don't think the new ones are made as well. Plus I want to protect my investment a bit, and be able to basically sell it for what I paid for it, should it not work out. Agree that bottom line, the guitar has to play and SOUND good. Haven't seen that local ES-335 (1979) so can't tell what it's like. WIth the older Gibsons though, sound is almost a secondary consideration to collectors and resellers, sadly... I'll try to educate myself on the different 70's Artist models, their strengths and weaknesses, so I can find a model well suited to my needs and aspirations. Cheers. |

At the risk of being flamed, and with the greatest respect for Ibanez guitars, I was able to purchase a very nice 1979 Yamaha SA2000 recently for $750. It is the nicest 335 type guitar that I have ever played, and I've played the real thing and many clones (but I haven't yet tried the AS200 . . . ) Lotta bang for the buck!!! |

$750 is a steal for a Yamaha SA2000. I had one and it compared very fairly with the Ibanezs. Only one left in the picture is the AM255.

Sounds like I should add the SA2000 to my list! Thanks for the tip. I generally stay away from Yamaha but sounds like they produced some fine instruments in the 70's. CHeers! |

Hey Ace, I've wanted that same axe (SAS1500) for a long time. They are very hard to come by. I've only seen 3 on e-Bay in the last several years. I think you can still get them new in Japan. |

I am looking for info re: a 70's? ES-175 with dual humbuckers, maple with the word artist on the truss rod cover. Can't seem to find any info. This guitar has no serial # or labels. Ibanex headstock. Blond. Anyone have any insights? |
