AS200 had Super 70s until 1980 (right?) and after that Super 58s. Is there meaningfull difference in sound? Else?
The more collectible the older?
I might have possibility to buy a 1980 AS200.

I posted pretty much the same question a few threads down -- "AS200 on ebay questions." The 1980 Ibanez catalog describes the AS200 as having Super 70s, and the 1981 catalog says Super 58s. I also remember reading once that the change from 70s to 58s was made sometime in late 1980. But recently I came across something that said it was done sometime in 1981. So all I know is that in 1979 they were using Super 70s. In 1982 they were using Super 58s. And sometime in 1980 or '81 they made the change to 58s. I wish I knew the exact month and year because many people selling these guitars don't know what they have in them. I have noticed that the 1979 and 1980 AS200s have pearloid tuning knobs, and sometime in 1981 they made the switch to gold-plated tuning knobs. So it's occurred to me that perhaps the change to Super 58s coincided with the change from pearloid to gold tuners.

I can't tell you a thing about the difference in sound between the two pickups. That's something I'd like to know myself. I really hate having to buy a guitar that I can't even see, let alone play first. I've owned many guitars in the past and I had made the decision to never buy another guitar that I couldn't play beforehand. But even living in NYC the odds of finding an AS200 or 2630 (and most other old Ibanez's) in a store are pretty bad. These are the guitars I'm interested in, so I think I'm stuck having to buy another guitar that I won't be able to actually play first. What can you do? Life's a gamble I guess.

Sorry for straying way off your question. The simple answer is that a 1980 AS200 is likely to have Super 70s.

I forgot that there is "Super XX" thread in the Miscellaneous section.
Not very much info even there .

I have Korean Super 58s on my AS120 and Super 70s on my Ibanez 2457. The 2457 will be back next week from the repair shop, it's having a full rewire. When it's back, I'll write a little bit on the differences between them. I know the Korean 58s will probably be different to Japanese 58s but it's my contribution to the topic :-)
