A funny history: i have a pm100 black,is a great guitar, and I happy with this guitar, until yesterday, i found a pm100 blonde in a friend music store, and she looks really good ,so i spent two hours playing the both guitars my black one and the blonde, and cant' explain, but the blonde sound much better.
Any have similar experience with this?
and of course ,I buy the blonde pm100
and of course my wife ask "another guitar more?"
Thanks in advance
Rick

LOL that's a nice story rick... i wish i could get a black one!

i've read that sometimes the blondes are better bacause the factory cannot "hide" eventual wood imperfections. but maybe that is just a nonsense story.
put something on youtube or post a photo here...

and hey, now you need two new tailpieces!!!

I seems to me that on a high quality hand made guitar that no two would be alike. It may be that the top was carved in just a certain way or the thickness is slightly different.

Hi,I think in wood imperfections and things like that, but maybe is more simple explanation maybe just each piece of wood is unique, and retail unique resonance personality, and no Petruz, i need only one tailpiece, because I sell the black one (my bank account need some mercy),BTW,you are right Steve is a nice guy¡,and a pm100 with carved top would be my dream.

rick, if you have photos please post them.
it's true that two "equal" guitars will not sound the same. it's the beauty - and the luckiness - of finding the right one.
the top of my PM100 is pretty plain, but i've seen blonde PMs with nice, lightly burled tops. the same succeeded with FG100s; i had two of them, one plain and one with a beautiful birds-eye maple top.
anyway, i don't think a laminate top can make that much difference in sound quality. a good setup, or a "broken in" instrument can feel much better than another with, say, old strings or too high action.

btw, did you ever had the chance to play a PM120 to compare it with the PM100? i'm pretty curious about this guitar. i'm fascinated about thinline archtops.

Hi Petruz, I absolutely agree with you,the finding of the rigth guitar have multiple parameters, and luck is a important one
I send the new pm to my Luthier because the former owner use a 013 with real high accion, and I dont like too much this way for my playing
so in a couple of days I will sent pics
the only minor dislike about my new blonde is the fingerboard ebony grain,in my black one, seem to be less tight, more "natural wood grain",the blonde have a really tight grain, like paint black
but the top is very nice.
The pm120 is a great mystery for me too¡
Petruz,if you play one,Please tell me some of your impressions about.
Regards
Rick

I remember writing something that could have been mistakenly interpreted like that, but it was NOT what I actually wrote.

The context in which I wrote this was about the L-5CES and Johnny Smith copies, which are available in sunburst and natural finishes.
My story was about the desirability of blondes, which is higher because the original Gibson blondes are more expensive, but then we are talking AAA+ or AAAA+ grade CARVED SOLID SPRUCE TOPS under the clearcoat. On a laminated selected spruce or pressed solid spruce I don't expect any predictable difference in quality and sound: sometimes you're lucky with the sound of a pressed top or a laminated top, but they are not "voiced" or something.
I also remember writing something about the reason why some normally stained and varnished guitars were sprayed black or white (like the white AM205). I suspect that under the paint there is some OPTICAL flaw, perhaps a filled dent or something. I never meant to suggest this flaw could be HEARD. The sound of a laminated thinline or archtop depends more on the strings and the pickups and the set-up. Make sure that the bridge makes good DIRECT contact with the top. Use the same strings as always, the ones you like best on jazzboxes. Measure the resistance of the pickups of both guitars with the volume pots wide open. Are they identical? Are the slots of both nuts filed correctly? Measure the distance between the pole pieces and the strings, and adjust if necessary. If these parameters are all the same, the guitars should sound about the same.

As for black finish...
Les Paul chose a black finish for LP Custom in order to create more CONTRAST between the top and his right hand. It helped to display the hand of the maestro.

Wow Ginger, you are an expert¡,i find very good points in your post, let me say,my experience with both pm100 finish are very personal, and I don't try to do any generalitation about this,
is just my particular feelings about this particular case.
In the case of the clear finish ,I happy to see the mahogany one piece neck, and things like that
and i agree with you,the optical flaw is only this, optical flaw, and about the scientific test
I dont have the time for those kind of test, but im sure this will be the right way to known the true.
I want to give you thanks for share you knowledge about this item
Best regards
Rick
