Hi!
I always wondered what the so called bookmatched guitar tops is all about? Does it have to do with cheaper production? Or is it just an aesthetic thing? Do the bookmatched guitars have more value to collectors?

greets,
stony

bookmatched is usually talked about on solid carved wood instruments when they match the two pieces of wood for the top. If it's not bookmatched, you can really see a difference between the two pieces of wood when, for instance, the bass side is darker than the treble side and so on...
On some bookmatched instruments you can hardly tell that there are two pieces of wood in the top.

Building off of what Aroee has described, here are a couple of links that help explain bookmatched woods:

Here's an example of bookmatched maple in its board form. It is being held by one luthier, Jim Surles of northern California. The bookmatched maple he's holding is rather interesting. See if you agree.

Here's one of his custom Strat/Jackson models he built for me with a bookmatched maple top and Brazilian Rosewood fretboard.
