I'm having a problem with my AK85 staying in tune. I can hear the strings popping in the nut when I adjust the tuning. It has the same strings on it that it came with and they seem to be in pretty good shape. Should I file the nut, change the tuners, try a heavier set of strings,...?
Thanks.

Hey crjj!!

What you are experiencing is pinging in the nut..

What you need to firstly do is either clean the nut slots up or slightly change the angle the string hits the nut at.. Or get the nut replaced with a nice new bone nut(will make the instrument sound better and will last longer..)

If you do not know what you are doing please take the guitar to a professional repairer, It will only cost you about $50 to get a new nut cut..

You can also try some graphite in the slots. A sharpened pencil will provide you with all you need. Just run it back and forth inside the slots and see if that corrects the problem. If it don't follow Spiro's steps.

CRJJ, do me a favour and try this please...Go out and get yourself a set of GHS Semi Flat wound 12 gauge strings..string it up with these..then check your neck angle after a day or so..make sure its dead straight...then set the adjustable bridge at 2mm on the low E side (thick E) and 1.7mm on the high E (thin E)
this may solve the issue you are having. If you do not wish to do this then let the neck of 1/4 turn at the truss rod
Captain Ibanez:-)
p.s. let me know how you get on please
