Gentlemen,

What kinds of jazz pickups would work well in my 255? I was going to restore it to original condition with Super 58s. But then I thought, perhaps I should open myself to other possibilities.

I've read of Pearly Gates and Pearly Gates Plus. What is the difference between them? How would these sound?

I have a AG75 with Benedetto B-6s in it. What are your opinions of these pickups?

I am open to all opinions. I am interested in hearing of all the different kinds of pickups you guys use for jazz.

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the Super 58s. To me, they are a little muddy and 2 dimensional.

I've always wanted to try a B6. How do YOU like it?

I think the Pearly Gates is supposed have be a Texas Blues sound ala ZZ Top.

For a mahogany semihollow, I like:

Dimarzio PAF Classic - The name says it all - A classic sounding PAF. Terrific in the bridge position - rich, bluesy, articulate, resonant.

Bartolini PBF-49 vintage neck humbucker - Could be a great pickup on this guitar if you like a clear punchy jazz sound ala Benson, Scofield etc. Although I love the neck pickup, I found the PBF-51 bridge pickup too harsh.

PBF-55 jazz guitar neck humbucker - have not tried this one yet. Supposed to be a little softer/rounder

Ibanez V1/V2 - why not? They're a little hot, but they sound friggin' great in every guitar I've tried them in, even for jazz. Warm and articulate. They're pretty easy to find on eBay - I got a set for $30.

Sven,

The Benedetto B-6s are the best pickups I've heard, warm, bright with a wonderfull tone.

Also, I took your advice. I bought a DiMarzio PAF Classic for the bridge and a Bartolini PBF-49 for the neck.

The DiMarzio was easy to find. The Bartolini was difficult to find, but I finally found a dealer in Louisiana who had one onhand and reasonably priced.

I've got that good feeling of being anxious-with-anticipation at their arrival.

Thanks for the tip.

Sven,
Scofield plays apparently with his bridge PU. Do you think a DiMarzio PAF Classic would deliver crunch sounds ala Sco ?
I am interested in replacing the bridge PU of my AM 255 (a second hand Super 70 : very low output compared to the Super 58) with a SD SH 4 (the JB).
What's your opinion ?

When I've seen Scofield play, he uses both pickups, and is constantly tweaking the volume knobs to adjust the mix.

The sound that reminded me the most of Scofied was when I added a little crunch to my clean channel using the Bartolini neck pickup, which is a fairly bright pickup.

To my ear, no bridge pickup gets into that kind of territory. What the PAF Pro does provide is a nice clear, airy, crunchy ES335 kind of tone, which sounds a lot to me like Robben Ford on Jing Chi live at Yoshi's, or maybe Larry Carlton. Great for a bluesy fusion sound.

Who knows... Scofield is supposedly using Super 58s.
