I tell ya - I love gutiars but if I had to part with most of my instruments I swear my GB10 would be one of the last to go... I can not believe that it did not sell sooner, I got it for a great price!!! These things are going sky high these days!! The seller had accidentally misspelled Benson in the ad. Perhaps this caused it to be overlooked?? Original hard case, not the flightcase, but that is OK. Just some discoloration of the binding but that is normal if I am not mistaken, no cracking or disintegration at all!! Orval told me to change the pickguard if I was going to play it, are they fragile?? BTW, how can you tell besides the speed knobs that it is pre 83? I have not yet received it, but I will be sleeping with it for sure. Bigmike Username: Bigmike Registered: 10-2002 Posted on Sunday, May 29, 2005 - 11:52 pm:    The deterioration of the guard (if stored in the closed case all the time) can cause the gold hardware to corrode and pit (THAT happened to me with my FIRST Byrdland copy), it can eat at the lining of the case FACING the pickguard and THAT chemical reaction can do other stuff to the finish on the top (especially under and around the pickguard). Check the serial number of the back of the neck to confirm year... I figure any EARLY '78 to '82 (or '83) GB-10 especially a natural finish one, a real score. On the older of the GB-10's they used real nice maple on the backs and sides - mostly nice birdseye wood with a bit of flame. A great score... I too just grabbed a '79 GB10NT off of Gbase. Must be the season. As warned the pickguard gassing can be an issue. The previous owner of mine changed the guard as well as the pickups, but kept the original case. I bought a new case just in case the chemicals from the original pickguard still existed in the fabric. Yep, the interior of the case can hold harmful gasses and continue to damage your instrument. But you've got a GREAT instrument. Enjoy! Note that this guitar has been outside of the case for nearly a year now. The strings were new a few months ago. At that time I polished the frets. Look closely and you will see how insidious this problem can be...even when the guitar is not stored in the case! Note: I specifically left these pictures large so that the detail was easy to see. I do not recommend uploading pictures this large. Look at the fret ends closet to the pickguard: Everything metal is affected: With a flash shot you can see another striking view of the deterioration that is going on: This is not house dust that has accumulated. It is the residue of the pickup plating and the pickguard material. Finally, the only solution, new parts that you can get directly from Hoshino...they ain't cheap though. But it's the first line of defense and prudent. My experience is that once the process starts, being in the case is the worst thing that you could do. However, not being in the case doesn't cure the situation. Clearly, the proximity of metal parts to the constantly corroding pickguard is the real culprit. My advice: examine your pickguard and pickups regularly for signs of corrosion (green is bad! ). Replace the pickguard quickly or it will affect the metal parts VERY quickly. I see no corrosion in the photo, and the guard looks like a new replacement...no yellowing. Check it closely when you receive it. Look at the upper frets, screws and metal parts near the guard. If tarnished, they were gassed. If the screws and p'ups are shiny, they may have been replaced. All in all, it looks like a killer GB! We need a full tone report...and more pics. If so, then you shouldn't have to worry about the problem for a while. Ibanez seemed to fix the corrosion problem caused by the material in the pickguard by 1980. Has anyone seen any AS200's with similar damage? The body is in incredible condition, only three very unnoticeable dings. I do think that the pickups have been replaced, the guitar was gassed as they say, as the strap button on the heel shows the corrosion, which leads me to the only problem with the guitar. The heel binding has dried and cracked. it is still intact but with any use it will break off. I know that I should remove the corroded strap button asap. nothing else on the guitar shows the signs of decay. Now back to the good stuff. The frets have absolutely ZERO wear on them. And the neck wood is like it was never touched by any hands, let alone oily ones. I am happy overall and the way that this guitar plays!!!!!!!! I cannot believe it. I do want suggestions as to what to do to have the binding repaired. I have a friend that has painted guitars for me, so I know that he could touch in the clear on the affected area, but I know nothing about installing new binding. Then along came the Ibanez George Benson models. Anyone that has beheld one in person and then played one knows it's far more than looks. They are one of the easiest to play and most flexible sounding instruments I've ever owned. Congratulations on your score - and considering that all the parts that ususally look pretty ratty on the older GB-10s have already been replaced and look so good you got a GREAT DEAL for the price you paid. I wanna see a shot of the back - the woods used on the bodies of the older GB-10s are awesome, especially on the natural finish models... From the looks of the corrosion on the strap pin, I'd recommend looking into purchasing a new pin and case for her...just in case the gassing has spread to the fabric. It's amazing how that spreads to metal all around the guitar. Easy fix on a great vintage piece. Bet she sounds fantastic! This is the most responsive, most rich sounding guitar that I have ever owned. I played it through my Mesa/Boogie Triaxis, and my T.C. Electronics Gmajor and even at high gain it sounds so full and soulful. Even with flatwounds!!!!!!It did feedback some, but come on, Mesa/Boogie at high volume, you expect that. Anyone who doubts that George Benson uses Ibanez made guitars has obviously never played mine, because the tone is unmistakeable. Due to the condition of the guitar I have decided not to gig with it regularly, Besides, I play at least three nights a week, and this guitar is not appropriate for the stuff I do in the rock genre. I will post more pics soon.
