Hey guys!

I'm signing on for a tour with a modern rock group. They get something along the lines of a Alice In Chains, King's X, Stone Temple Pilots, Incubus kinda vibe. Fairly heavy distortion, etc.

I'm debating what guitar to use for this gig. It is definitely a humbucker gig so my Strat is out. I have a Parker Nitefly-M, but that is probably not the right vibe for the gig(it never is, probaly gonna sell it). The only other contender from the current stable is my Ibanez AM-50. It is a great axe and I've mostly used it for jazz and fusion kind of stuff. I currently have 11s on it and it gets pretty muddy when distortion is applied.

Any suggestions on how to get more of a modern les paul vibe out of the guitar? Maybe lighter strings? A new pickup would probably do some good to. Some kind of Duncan I'd imagine.

Anyone doing this with thier old Ibanez? Any suggestions?

You know! Duncan has a custmer surpport telephone line. You can ask the question and recomendation to your guitar specifications and your needs.

You can ask as many questions you want and you get more knowledge about pick ups.

I'm not so sure the AM-50 is a fit for this gig, I'd keep it just for jazz or fusion. You can still get great distortion out of a strat single coil, as long as your amp has some decent distortion...and if its not enough throw a tubescreamer or something similar in front of it.

Those bands you mention have some pretty heavy guitar. Frmly in bucker/solidbody territory. But I could see no reason that the AM50 wouldn't be able to handle it. One of the newer bass heavy pickups designed to maintain definition under high gain would help. Maybe a DiMarzio Air Zone? AM50 is fairly bright, and a big bassy PU might be a good match. I actually think that nice resonant semi-hollow crunch would work well with that sound. Maybe you'll be on to something new :-)
