All- Been lurking here, but just picked up an AS50 at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7330004398 Been playing mostly acoustic archtops for a while. I'm really liking it! Got a couple of questions: 1) The three way pickup switch needs replacement. I'd like as close as possible to the original. Anyone know a source? Didn't really like the unsealed switchcraft at StewMac. 2) I usually use TI Plectrum .012s. I was thinking of putting on TI BeBop .011s. Is this appropriate, or anyone have a suggestion? I tend to a gravitate somewhere between an Abercrombie / Pat Martino kind of sound, but I'm not crazy about flatwounds... 3) Anyone know a good setup guy / tech in the Boston / Worcester / Fall River / Providence area? I'll throw up some pix as soon as i get a chance... TIA!!! -xy |

You got a nice 1982 AS50 in cherry finish. It's a late AS50 with Super58's vs. the earlier V-2's. The pup switch looks original(AS50's did not have the rubber surounds around the switch like the AS100's and 200's). In fact, everything looks original on this guitar. Congratulations. Ace |

You can order a replacement switch from an Ibanez dealer. Part # 3PS1C3WTG Is the 3-way switch used in the current hollows and semis. It looks very similar to the old one. You should be able to use .012s with no problem. Some experimentation would probably be in order. TIs are great I have not tried the BeBops yet, although I have a set still in the package. Elixir Polyweb strings are nice too - they take some of the bite out of a bright sounding guitar. The V2 Pickups in the AS50 are fairly hot, but they are more midrangey than a PAF style, but are actually OK for jazz. They're warm sounding, but can easily drive an amp into crunch mode - maybe too muddy though. Perhaps lower output PAF style PUs would be an option. Bartolini PBF 55/75s would be a good choice for the Abercrombie/Martino sound. -Sven |

You're right Ace, I should have looked at the pictures more closely. Those are Super 58s. -Sven |

Wow, you guys are fast! It never occurred to me that one could still get dealer parts for these! I'm glad I got the super 58's, I didn't know there were multiple types on this model. I'll probably leave them on until I know the box well. I may try and pick up some gigs this fall, and these guys growl nicely through my 67 ampeg when cranked... -xy |

xy, I'm not saying this is the same part that was used 23 years ago, but it appears similar. Definitely give the Super 58s a try. they are very well liked. They sound a little undefined for my tastes. -Sven |
