Hi! I just purchased a '79 SA-400 and I was very glad to discover this site... it's the only place I could find any info at all about it on the web. Were these only made for a few years, or not very many made? Seems like they're pretty rare. It's a fabulous sounding (and playing) guitar though, great sustain and rich resonance... this one has the original (?) super 80 humbucker in the bridge and Duncan '59 in the neck position. I would like to hear what it sounds like with a super 80 in the neck too, but I LOVE the '59; I have one in my Strat as well. Do the super 80's always have the flying fingers etching on them? Here it is: It seems like the trapeze tailpiece is pretty unusual too. The serial number indicates it was made in January 1979. If anyone knows where I can get more info about this guitar I'd be grateful. I'd love to know what it might be worth... I paid $750 for it, and it's in decent, but not near mint, condition. Just a few dings and scratches. I can't help but think $750 is a good deal for a guitar that sounds like this... but I haven't found one for sale anywhere else. Maybe that's a good thing. Thanks, joe www.thefluxmusic.com |

Metaman, That's a very nice looking Ibanez SA400. It sounds like you really like the guitar, that's awesome! You mentioned that the neck pick is a Duncan 59er. I bet it sound killer! FYI- the Tailpiece is also non-original. It looks real close but it's not the same as the original Ibanez tailpiece. Enjoy! BLUES |

Metaman: That's a beatiful axe, you got there. Not too many have shown up on the site. Maybe you could post a close up of the tailpiece and bridge because that's where my catalog disagrees with you and Blues. My Dec. '77 catalog shows what looks to be the same tailpiece (does it have an embossed diamond on it?), but the bridge is a wide Gibraltar I. Blues: What kind of tailpiece should this have? |

Yeah, I was surprised at how little came up when I googled the model #... they must by fairly rare. Blues, do you think the trapeze was replaced, or it had a different type of tailpiece originally? I don't see any marks where a stop tail would have been removed... Maybe these will shed some light: I really appreciate having a place to geek out about this guitar... it's all I've been thinking about the last few days. As someone mentioned about their SA400 in another thread, "it plays itself", and sounds sweet to boot... Thanks, joe |
