Lovin' my new 85 FG100 but the E and A sure are wooooooofy. I dig the heavy strings so I have the tendancy to get the thickest available, ala Thomastick-infeld GB 14-55, etc. I would appreciate some advice and opinions.

I use Thomastic-infeld Swing12 on Pm and 13 on JSM,but I don't have FG. Sorry!

PS.I agree "Autumn in NY" What a cool tune that is !

I used Thomastik-infelds swing 13/52 on my FG and think it had a beautiful jazz tone.
These strings are very well calibrated, kinda "heavy top light bottom" wich is theoretically a jazzers paradise.

What do you have on there now?

I used T-I 13s on my FG100. The FG has a very distinct voice. I honestly felt the guitar had too much of a high-mid emphasis, and the T-Is brought it down some. It never sounded woofy to me. But I found the chords to be muddy. Had I kept the guitar, I would have probably tried a Bartolini PBF-55 pickup.

actually i sold my FG... damn...
i bought a hofner new president wich is a hell of a good traditional archtop, though; now i'm searching for an AM to have a more modern-sounding and principally feedback-free guitar too.

Funkle !
What's your motivation to choose Bartolini PBF-55 pickup?

Eastmongo, I really like the PBF-49 in my Dillion DR450. It gives the guitar a very nice clear, bright jazz tone. Never muddy, but not particulary dark. My logic was that the PBF-55 would be similarly voiced, maybe slightly softer, and would work well with the bright personality and location of the neck PU (close to the bridge) of the FG. I think it is best to work with the character of the guitar, rather than against it.

Eastmongo, a GB30 would be a great option, if you could find one. I think of it as a jazzier AM with a single cutaway. It has a great appearance too - still looks like a jazz guitar, if that matters to you.

Petruz, sorry, the last part about the GB30 was a response to your comment.

Thanks Funkle!
I am very interested in GB30 since I knew about it long time ago. It is too rare to find and could be expensive. I saw once on Ebay.
Is that all maple construction? I think it is.
Or,Is that has spruce center block like some of D'angelico semis?

i had a gb30 for a short time (may i say that i regret selling it? yes i do), that's a great instrument with a true jazz tone and lots of sustain too. the neck is similar to the GB10, ultra comfortable, and joins the body at the 16th fret for extra upper access.
i think this is one of the cooliest ibanez guitars and it's a shame being so rare (see another thread i put on this argument).

This thread inspired me to use my AM200 to work through some jazz standards, and it does have a very sweet voice. Also, it does, as far as I can tell, have a spruce center block.

I wish Ibanez would combine the through neck from the AS400 and the size and mahogany construction of the AM205 and make an "AM405".

I am sold!Acetan!

I wander how much "Ibanez" watch this site for new product ideas.

I mean look there are so many people in here, different age, ethnicity, regular musicians, weekend musicians, but people seem to agree quality, personality, inovative design, playability of Ibanez. Prestige level Ibanez guitar and bass shine like nothing else.

I hope Ibanez can distribute more of higher models other than artcore line ups.
Those artcores are good guitars, but it does not change people's notion of cheep guitar=Ibanez=not brand like Gibson.
The one of big music store that I go somtimes only have one prestige model at a time.
Now they have one PM100. They had GB10 before and JSM100 before that.
Why don't they have all of them all the time!
They always have Gibson re-issue 175.
That re-issue 175 is ok,but isn't better than GB200 I think.

If a GB200 is a 10, I would rank the ES175 re-issue at 7.

I think Ibanez should use the same strategy as Toyota/Lexus, and use a new "Luxury" brand for their high-end guitars and let run-of-the-mill models be sold under the Ibanez label.

Now that I've said this, it dawns on me that Gibson is doing the same thing with the Epiphone brand. Aren't they?

Ibanez already tried the Lexus thing with Maxus, Artfield and Starfield, and they all flopped. As Jim Donahue sums it up concisely, "Americans have a Gibson Fender thing". Hey, maybe Ibanez should start making Gibson copies :-)

Eastmongo, I'd like to think that Ibanez management would look here, but we are the minority. The majority want's the most bang for their buck, and they want to look and sound like whatever band is currently in rotation on MTV. That's who Ibanez is marketing to.

I don't watch MTV. Is there any young bands use artcore guitars?
when I taught some students,I had impressions from my students that they belive Gibson and Fender are cool and everything else aren't.
Where does that come from? The advertisements on the magazine and their heros.
Even those luthier made custom guitars considered to be uncool because they don't know.
A guy who own music store told me one day that Gibson is the only one which used value do not go too low from the new price(fare condition).
If you have luthier made arch top,you will have hard time to sell when you have to,but your Gibson is going to be sold easily with good price.
That's the reason he recommended me Gibson L4.
I mean L4 is ok,but...
If I spend$3000, I want even better.
Oneday I found vintage Gibson L5 and GB200 side by side at Guitar center in Hollywood.
I played both. Both of them are great, but GB200 was better.
Under the normal situation, we can't have that comparison because Ibanez archtops are not around much.
When was the last time you found Ibanez archtops other than artcore at local music store?
Anyway, I am glad this site is here.
I hope I can meet more vintage & Prestige Ibanez guitars.

Hi Sven,

I did not pick up a guitar from 1984 to 1999 and totally missed the high-end brands by Ibanez that you mentioned. I thought they were brands used in other parts of the world. So that didn't work, hmmm.

I have played allmost every box you can name for over 50 years and have finally settled for a gibson 335 reissue, a takamine nylon electric made in Japan, and my favorite of all guitars an Ibanez AF75 (The gretsch orange one). That baby will go down in history as one of the greats...you'll see...

Joevocht, it's very nice to hear such thing from a person with obvious amount experience! Do You have an opinion on AF75/85 versus AK85 (spruce top and rosewood bridge).

I'd love to hear Your take. Thanks!

-Aki.

I found only a difference in appointments...by the way, since the last message I traded the 335 (too heavy for this old man) for a black and gold LP classic for my son and I got a LP studio with burstbuckers pro (all Mahogany) It was a smart move since tonewise the LP has it all...I also picked up a MIM strat (Wow!! is all I can say) that makes your fingers fly!!!
