Hi: I have my absolutely-mint JSM100 for sale in classifieds, but it has not sold yet. If it does not sell, I will keep it, but then must start using it far more often (I'd like to sell in order to get something less mint and that I'm not nervous about bringing on gigs). If I used it far more often, I'd need one bit of additional versatility: a coil tap switch so as to enable single-coil for front or both pickups. Is this a major mistake to mod a no-BS perfect, not-a-scratch-guitar? Would I be banned and persona non grata? Thanks, |

Rev~ If you want to add a coil tap, you might consider one of the non-invasive tone potentiometers that are push/pull design. No need for a mini-toggle switch! And it is reversable if you decide to sell. I've not tried one but hear they are a reasonably good option for getting a 'split' tone without damaging your JSM's top. I believe the Super 58's are wired to accept coil tap, but you should check yourself or take to a tech before ordering the pots. And go ahead and take that beauty out for a gig or two. |

Yeah, I suppose that'd work; PRSs have that option, don't they.... But I'd still have the heebie jeebies (sp?) regarding theft or others' stupidity on a gig. Regards, |

Yeah, I just might keep it, though I dig the idea of having a more worn-in guitar. Wish I still had my old, blonde ES175 - that was so sweet it damn near played itself! Rickd: How much is a "tad?" I've seen several in the past few days for anywhere from $1400 to $1750. Thanks, |

Rev~ You also might consider picking up a 'beater' semi-hollow for gigs. A nice old 'AS' model of your choosing could fit the bill nicely. I use a well worn, but great player LR10 at some gigs and keep the nicer gits for jam sessions or home playing. Your are correct that some club venues are simply too risky to bring a nice axe to. |

Revlimitbounce, i'd say around 12-14, you're in the ballpark, but if it were me, i'd hang on to it. That's one of my dream guitars. Alas, my wife has been accepted to WVU for her PhD, so my guitar buying days, the good guitars, are over for a while.

Hey Guitartim, et al: Thanks; yes, I'd love to find a beater/player AS (hopefully 200) for just a little dosh, but even the beaters are pretty spendy these days. Someone listed an AS100 on fleabay for $2k at first, then must have relisted at $1500, realizing he must have been on crack. I did find a 2630 with damage for under $1000, but even that's a lot (forgetting the rarity factor) for a guitar one might use as a beater. Makes a new Artcore a little more sensible, but I'm still not enthused about them that much. Thanks for the sugestions, though! Keep 'em coming! Separately, are any of you in the NYC area? If so, is anyone planning to go to the NY Vintage Guitar Show this spring? I'll start another post elsewhere on this, too. Rev |
