http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7347224414&rd=1&sspagename=ST RK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1 This is proof that if you are patient, you can get lucky on eBay. It has no model number, but is identical to the AS200 in the '81 catalog. I watched this auction closely, and just couldn't let it go at that price. Had the seller known the model number, it would have gone for twice the price. I was a little nervous buying from a low feedback seller, but his communication was excellent, and I knew even if it was beat up, this was a steal. -Sven |

Yes, but only briefly at a shop and guitar show. I can never get a good feel for a guitar under those circumstances. And I won't be able to get a good feel for this one until I give it the funkle setup. I'd say it has good potential. Part of the appeal of an old guitar is it's personality. Here is it's history from the seller: The guitar was originally bought new by Don Hayes. The father of country recording artist Wade Hayes. Don took the guitar with him to Nashville. He did several recording sessions with this box. He sold the guitar to me in 97( his wife claimed he had to may guitars)(As if that could ever happen). I have played it on a gerular basis in a band. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have. |

Here are some less flattering images. She'll clean up nicely though. I'm thinking of filling the chip on the neck using the Spiro epoxy & colored dye method.

"mmmmmm a nice spray job (oke orginal colors) would be nice" Note to self: keep my guitars away from Patrick Well put Six. I never got into the old grungey guitar thing. I think they run better when they look good, just like cars. -Sven |

"funkle nice computer you have on the left..." You're thinking it would look good with a new paint job, maybe some flames or racing stripes? |

Jeffsailor, which bidder were you? it looks like at least 2 of the 3 other bidders were ICW regulars. I wonder why no one bid higher on this guitar? I've been playing it for the last few days, and I really like it. The sound is so full and resonant. And you really do sound like Scofield with the bridge PU. This weekend, she'll get cleaned up. The action was super high. I've adjusted it to a more reasonable height, but there are a few buzzes I cant get rid of, so I may take it in for a fret job. -Sven |

Here it is after a thorough cleaning and polishing, and a Plek fret dress and setup by Gary Brawer (Joe Satriani's guitar tech). It plays and sounds wonderfully. I'm still amazed at how great of a jazz tone it has. None of the Korean or Chinese AS models have a tone or resonance like this one.

I also had Gary fill the nasty chip on the back of the neck, as you can see in the last image. The color is not perfect, but it is dead level. One think I noticed when I took her apart is that the pickups are Super 70s. The tone from the neck PU is excelent - jazz heaven. The bridge tone is mellow and has all that 335 tone, but seems to have tome feedback issues, and has a little to much pick attack. -Sven -Sven |

Great catch Sven. I was watching the low responses to this auction with amazement. Glad it went to a nice home instead of some "purple guitar eater". Ace |

Nice job Funkle you are lucky , great guitar. Agree totally with you concerning the new models. Funny you are talking about the super 70s pick-ups , just today i started to modify one which orginally came out of my modified FA100 (from Blonde to Purple), this pick-up sounds very jazz like, i'm now making a floating humbucker from it...with some help ofcourse. adding a modified plastic pick-up cover , removed screw holders etc adding a neckholder too. Will post the results soon. |

I've just ordered a new set of pickups for my AS200. I chose a Benedetto A6 for the neck position. I realize I just described the tone as jazz heaven 4 posts up, but I just cant help tinkering. I've heard the Super 80 described as brittle and Hi Fi, so I can only imagine how the Benedetto will improve the tone of this great sounding guitar There is definitely room for improvement with the bridge pickup. And I've chosen a Seymour Duncan SH-11 Custom Custom. I'm hoping this will really bring out the tone, while eliminating some of the high end and pick noise. I'll post a review when I put them in. -Sven |

D, I put in the A6 and SH-11 last night. That A6 is sweeeeeeeeeeeet! I'm gonna' withold my final review until I've logged more playing time. But I can say now it seems to do everything I was hoping it would do. It is dark and smooth, but detailed. And it is compressed yet dynamic? - not really sure how that is possible... And the SH-11 is a ticket to room 335 -Sven |
