Thanks for converting the URL!
Here's the big question I have: Why? A lot of trouble went into making this a fake Gibson. The label inside is something I've never seen before. It's got to be counterfeit, no? With handwritten serial and model number. Why go thru all the trouble and then offer it as an Ibanez.., a statement that can not be verified. Too weird.
Also, it doesn't seem clear if the current owner is the one who made the mods. $1500.00 is pretty much what you'd pay for an all original 2355. Seems really stupid to reward a forgery. |

Are there any documented cases of Ibanez producing Gibson branded guitars? I know they made copies but never counterfeits.
The label inside is cut off-center. |

Back in the mid-90s I got a blonde Ibanez Johnny Smith double pickup at a guitar show that had a Gibson headstock overlay, correct Gibson tuners, Johnny Smith tailpiece (that SAID Johnny Smith) and everything. It was NOT a carved top. Great guitar.
I sold it back to the same dealer (Jay Rosen) about two years later. This is one of those examples of how people spend a whole lotta money on something (I won't go so far as to say they paid too much, you decide that). But we've also seen some ridiculously great deals on Ibanez instruments in the last week or so. Doing business on eBay you see it all. |

I emailed this seller a couple of days ago, but he didn't post my question or his answer. He seems to be evasive about admiting to anything, saying, "Ibanez really wanted this to look just like a Gibson". The only thing he would admit is that the logo is a waterslide decal that "could be removed if you wished". I asked him about the Kalamazoo label, but he wouldn't even go there. So it's still not clear what he wanted to accomplish by tagging on the Gibson name. Maybe he just wanted to impress his friends?
I think he's just trying to avoid accusations of Ebay fraud without implicating himself for adding the false ID. |

Did he stated he did the decal work ?? Like my Johnny Smith copy I had - he coulda bought it like that. A lot of guys wanna be seen holding a Gibson but can't afford them. Anyway that was a crazy high price... |

Well, you're right, he could've bought it that way, but why not just admit it? That auction would've seemed less suspicious if he had just said: "Here is an ES-175 copy that I suspect to be an Ibanez that was sold to me with the grovers and the Gibson label and decal already in place, so that's how I left it" or something to that effect. It's kinda weird, but that guitar is certainly a looker.
Big Mike, were you sold that JS fully aware that it was a copy or did you find out later on? I wonder how many sellers would really be up front about something like this, if you didn't know your Ibanez history. |

Oh no, Jay had a big card on the guitar that said IBANEZ COPY... But the faceplate on the headstock was pure Gibson, gloriously perfect. And for what I did with it it was a great guitar. And I got my first Ibanez guitar back in 1965 in Chicago. I'd had a 355 copy, a 175 copy and a sunburst JS copy. The blonde Johnny Smith was my second (the sunburst was a carved top). This blonde Ibanez JS copy really looked the part. I got it for about $1000.00. |

Johns...There is a guy that has been selling those orange labels on EBay for well over 4 years now, been getting as much as $20 a throw. The listing has been virtually continueous since 2002, I think the labels are authentic in that they came from the factory. |

BTW, I have the same guitar (sans Gibson appointments and tagged as Ibanez on headstock) that is in good condition-same highly flamed front and back-couldn't get any interest over $600 a couple of months ago. Weird huh ? |

l guess this still shows that the "Gibson is always superior than Ibanez" mindset is still out there after all these years!!
Hey, l might just rock the boat a little and turn a Gibson into an Ibanez and whack it on EBAY just to see how many poor deluded souls l can confuse |
